Wilhelm Arthur Vogel (born April 2, 1868 in Schwarzenberg ; † March 4, 1962 ibid) was a German trader, publisher of Erzgebirge song postcards and postcards, and photographer .

Live and act

After attending elementary school in Schwarzenberg and the trade school in Chemnitz Arthur Bird got into the Galanteriewarengeschäft his father Fürchtegott Wilhelm Vogel in Schwarzenberg Castle Road 4 with one. He kept the company name Wilhelm Vogel when he took over the business himself in 1899. In addition to his father's assortment, which also included all kinds of bobbin thread and goods , he built up another pillar by founding an art publisher. On numerous hiking tours through the surrounding area, he captured the cultural landscape and natural beauties with his camera. Over the years several thousand postcards of his homeland were created, with which he contributed to the promotion of tourism in the Ore Mountains. He was a member of the Erzgebirgsverein .

Vogel's song postcard series

With the song postcards printed by his art publisher Wilhelm Vogel , Arthur Vogel contributed to the spread and popularization of Ore Mountains folk music. On his initiative, Max Schreyer's song Dar Vuglbärbaam was printed with text, sheet music and colorful illustration on the first postcard of this type in a publishing series, probably in 1898/99, after Vogel had visited Anton Günther in Gottesgab and first admired his song postcards.

The first around 20 cards without numbering appeared from 1899 to 1905. Another 50 song cards by various authors followed until the 1950s. The originally unnumbered song postcards were given fixed and chronological numbering from around 1905 with little duplication.

The series includes musical works by almost all known Erzgebirge folk poets, including a card by Anton Günther , who is considered the founder of the song postcards. His Mei 'Zässichla , by Vogel Mei Zässichl , was the second publication in 1899. Hilmar Mückenberger , the Vogtland native poet born in the Ore Mountains, can be found for the first time with Wilhelm Vogel before he published his song cards himself in Plauen. Other well-known authors are: Curt Rambach , Curt Nestler , Hans Siegert , Bruno Herrmann , Albert Schädlich , Reinhold Fischer , Max Nacke , Christian Friedrich Röder , Gottfried Lattermann , Friedrich Maximilian Bergfeld and Herbert Stoll . As one of the few Erzgebirge poets, Hans Soph did not let Vogel publish or sell his postcards.
