Sir Arthur Knyvet Wilson, 3rd Baronet , VC , GCB , OM , GCVO (* 4. March 1842 in Swaffham , Norfolk , † 25. May 1921 ) was a British Commodore (Admiral of the Fleet) of the Royal Navy , the last was First Sea Lord between 1910 and 1911 .

Life

Training as a naval officer and promotion to admiral

Wilson was the third son and the third of five children of Rear Admiral George Knyvet Wilson and his wife Agnes Mary Yonge. His second eldest brother Roland Wilson Knyvet inherited in 1874 from his uncle Sir Archdale Wilson , 1st Baronet, the 1857 created for this noble title of Baronet , of Delhi . He himself completed his school education at the renowned Eton College and entered the Royal Navy on June 1, 1855 as a naval cadet (Naval Cadet) . After completing his training as a naval officer, he was promoted to lieutenant in the sea (Sub-Lieutenant) on March 4, 1861 and on December 11, 1861 to lieutenant in the sea (Lieutenant) . On September 18, 1873 he was promoted to frigate captain (Commander) and on March 19, 1880 to captain at sea (captain) . During the battles of El Teb , he distinguished himself in February 1884 for his particular bravery on the staff of Rear Admiral William Hewett , for which he was awarded the Victoria Cross (VC) on May 20, 1884 , the highest war decoration of the armed forces of the United Kingdom. On January 5, 1888, he became Companion of the Order of the Bath (CB).

On 20 February 1895, the transport Wilson was made to Rear Admiral (Rear Admiral) . As such, he succeeded Vice Admiral John Arbuthnot Fisher as Third Sea Lord and Controller of the Navy (Third Naval Lords and Controllers of the Navy) in 1897 . A post he held until his replacement by Rear Admiral William May 1901. He was then on 28 March 1901 to Vice Admiral (Vice Admiral) promoted and took over as successor to Vice-Admiral Harry Rawson the post of commander of the English Channel -Geschwaders (Senior Officer Command of the Channel Squadron) . He held this position until he was replaced by Vice Admiral Charles Beresford in 1903. In the meantime he was beaten on June 24, 1902 to Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath (KCB), so that since then he has had the suffix "Sir". After he took over in 1903 by Vice Admiral Gerard Noel the post of Supreme Commander of the Home Fleet (Commander-in-Chief, Home Fleet ) , the Channel Fleet in 1904 (Channel Fleet) has been renamed. He was also beaten on August 11, 1903 to Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (KCVO).

On February 24, 1905 he was appointed Admiral promoted and took over from Admiral Beresford the post of commander in chief of the products resulting from the Home Fleet new Channel Fleet (Commander-in-Chief, Channel Fleet) , while the previous channel fleet on December 14, 1904 for Atlantic Fleet ( Atlantic Fleet ) was reorganized. He held the position of commander-in-chief of the Canal Fleet until 1907 and was then replaced again by Admiral Beresford. On August 11, 1905 he was Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order (GCVO) and on November 9, 1906 Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath (GCB). It was on March 1, 1907, Fleet Admiral (Admiral of the Fleet) transported and treated as such in retirement.

Fleet Admiral, First Sea Lord and Baronet

1910 Wilson was recalled to active duty and took over as successor to Admiral of the Fleet Sir John Arbuthnot Fisher the post of First Sea Lord (First Sea Lord) . He was thus the highest-ranking soldier in the Royal Navy and held this position until his replacement by Admiral Sir Francis Charles Bridgeman in 1911. As such, he was also a member of the commission of the Lord High Admiral headed by the First Lord of the Admiral . He then finally retired on March 4, 1912. On March 8, 1912, he was awarded the Order of Merit (OM).

When his older brother Sir Roland Knyvet Wilson, 2nd baronet, died on October 29, 1919, he inherited his title as 3rd baronet. Since he himself remained unmarried and childless, the title expired on his death in 1921.
