The Schmiedbach is a main stream almost 5 km long in northeastern Baden-Württemberg , which flows into the Kocher from the left and west near the hamlet of Obermünkheim in the Untermünkheim municipality in the Schwäbisch Hall district . It arises from the confluence of its source branches Mühlbach and Asbach .

geography

course

The Schmiedbach collects some streams that arise on the eastern slope of the southern Waldenburg Mountains west of the loop of the Crailsheim – Heilbronn railway line around Gailenkirchen or east of this in the immediate foreland. The upper course, with its origin furthest from the mouth and the largest catchment area, is the left source branch of the Gailenkirchen village creek Mühlbach , which in the forest tip Knock an der Lauerhalde at about 407  m above sea level. NN arises and, after running south-westerly, flows together with its right branch when it reaches the edge of the village, which starts a few meters higher at the southern heap, but is slightly shorter . The combined stream then crosses the village center east-south-east and begins there, for the first time again, sounding like the slope of its beginnings, to form a noticeable valley basin. After leaving the village soft area, he reaches the Gipsmühle property, where the right source branch Asbach runs towards him, which is created in the foreland area of the mountains and surrounded by newer buildings in Gailenkirchen, but includes the longer Gliemeshaldenbach , which is almost the same height as the Mühlbach -Quellen on the southern slope of Gliemeshalde .

The stream is called Schmiedbach after the confluence at the Gipsmühle and from now on it runs eastwards. Soon it flows under the viaduct of the Haller West bypass and crosses over to the municipality mark of Untermünkheim . The hamlet of Suhlburg with the castle of the same name is located on the left side of the downward spur of the Schloßberg estuary at a very short tributary to the valley . Shortly afterwards it reaches the western edge of the hamlet of Obermünkheim, where the longest tributary Grundbach flows from the right , which together with its two high tributaries drains the Gailenkirchen hamlet of Wackershofen and the adjacent Hohenloher open-air museum. After this last inflow, the stream still crosses Obermünkheim and then flows after a total of 4.9 km at 258.4  m above sea level. NN from the left and west into the Kocher , shortly before it turns to the east-northeast at the main town of Untermünkheim.

Catchment area

The Schmiedbach drains an area of 9.9 km² in the morphologically very pronounced eastern slope of the Waldenburg Mountains between Hebsack / Altem Hau in the north and the Wartwald in the south, as well as a part of the Haller level upstream to the east to the Kocher at its knee at Ober- / Untermünkheim . The longest stretch west-east from the eaves in the Alten Hau - nearby is the highest point of the catchment area at 513.4  m above sea level. NN on the watershed - to the mouth at 258.4  m above sea level. NN it is 4.4 km long, across it it measures 3.4 km at its widest point.

The larger tributaries are all to the right of the main line, which is why the larger part of the catchment area is on the right-hand side and the Wittighausener Sperbersbach, which runs almost parallel to this eastward running across the northern watershed, is nowhere even 1.5 km away from it; the Sperbersbach drains via the short Untermünkheimer Unterlauf of the next Kocher tributary Dobelbach . The Kocher itself is so close to the eastern watershed that there is nowhere a left side stream running towards it.

Beyond the southern watershed, the Gottwollshausener Schleifbach also moves east to the Kocher. Behind the western watershed on the eaves of the Keuperbergland, its left tributaries drain from the Arzbach up to N to the Altenhaubächle to the east to the Bibers , which flows much further south into the Kocher. The morphologically very conspicuous watershed to the beaver between the spur of the Wartwald west of Gottwollshausen and the Alten Hau usually holds a height of around 500  m above sea level. NN . Only in the section between the northwest end of the Gliemeshalde and the southern Orthalde in the west of Gailenkirchen does it sink to almost 455  m above sea level. NN ; here the beaver inlet Böllbach, which begins very close to the west of the sheath, has eroded the upper eaves extensively.

The Hohenloher Freilandmuseum Wackershofen ( Museumsbach ) and Wackershofen itself ( Krautgartenbach ) are traversed by tributaries of the Unterlauf-Nebenbaches Grundbach and into the eponymous Gailenkirchen hamlet .

In the catchment area, in addition to the ones mentioned, there is also the Gailenkirchen residential area Frühlingsberg, which stands on the lower slope of an eastern spur of the Waldenburg mountains above the Asbach source.

To the northwest of Gailenkirchen, a very small snippet of the mountain forest in the Alten Hau belongs to the district of the town of Waldenburg in the Hohenlohe district , but it just drains to the Schmiedbach .

geology

Both Mühlbach branches begin in the Upper Gipskeuper ( Grabfeld Formation ), Museumsbach and Krautgartenbach in the deeper Gipskeuper, the Asbach and the smaller tributaries in the Lettenkeuper ( Erfurt Formation ). Approximately at the confluence of the Schmiedbach -Quelläste in the valley, the Upper Muschelkalk begins , the middle one only very close to the mouth.

Except in the west, the catchment area shows a fairly regular west-east zoning. The flat elevations of Wartwald in the southwest and Altem Hau in the northwest lie in the silica sandstone ( Hassberge Formation ), in front of which the terrain drops steeply into the Lower Bunter Marln ( Steigerwald Formation ); in between in the middle and noticeably deeper part of the western watershed there is also extensive reed sandstone ( Stuttgart formation ), which only forms narrow bands on the slope eastward in front of the Wartwald and Altes Hau .

The gypsum keuper then sets in further down to the east, and after a restless slope of the hill it tapers out flat at the foot of the mountain; on the railway line that draws a loop to the west around Gailenkirchen, there are gypsum islands in the lower part. The border to the Lettenkeuper ( Erfurt formation ) runs from the western edge of Wackershofen northwards through Gailenkirchen.

The shell limestone occurs for the first time on the slopes above the valley near Suhlburg, on the right side of the stream on a wide area between the lower Grundbach and the Kocher running to the east . The terrain here between the knight's and the well fields looks like an old southwestern Kocher noose: a wide hollow in the tapering branch without a watercourse, which could explain its size and a small surrounding hill, on the other side of which the deepened Schmiedbach uses the branch.

Valley fillings usually only start at the Gipskeuper / Lettenkeuper border. The geological map shows an alluvial fan in Obermünkheim towards the estuary, which, however, was not visible in the terrain of the unspoilt Kocheraue. In the plain east of Gailenkirchen there are islands of Quaternary loess sediment on a few hill heights . On the left lower slope, for example, from Suhlburg, a suspected fault runs in the east-north-east direction, the Hochscholle is on the Schmiedbach side.

Landscape and protected areas

Of the 9.9 km² of the catchment area, around 1.9 km² are forested slopes on the edge of the Waldenburg Mountains in the west. The village of Gailenkirchen has the largest share of the approximately 0.5 km² settlement area. The remaining open land is divided into grassland, which mainly takes up large areas around Gailenkirchen and in the valleys, and arable land, with a slight preponderance of the first.

Protected areas

The part of the catchment area in the west and north of the Crailsheim – Heilbronn railway is part of the Swabian-Franconian Forest Nature Park . The open terrain here on the western eaves of the Waldenburg Mountains is part of an FFH area of the same name , another with the name Kochertal Schwäbisch Hall - Künzelsau extends from its eastern edge over the lower Grundbach into the lower Schmiedbach valley from the western outskirts of Obermünkheim to the municipality border Schwäbisch Hall.

Natural monuments in it are a winter linden tree in Obermünkheim near the Lauf and another one at the old Gailenkirchen train station. In Suhlburg an oak has this status.

In addition to large parts of the streams, a number of field trees and galleries along the railway line that crosses the catchment area of the Schmiedbach are under biotope protection . In the east, near the Kocher Valley, where wine was grown in warmer times, there are also stone bars.

Viewpoints

The hiking trail from Schwäbisch Hall to Waldenburg in the Wartwald east of Michelfeld- Rinnen, which runs very close to the eaves, offers a good view of the Schmiedbach catchment area, especially in times of low vegetation. a small mountain spur with a resting place is kept free and offers an overview all year round. From this side, however, the spring slopes themselves remain in the blind spot. The lower valley and the steeply rising slope of the Waldenburg mountains can be seen clearly from the Schwäbisch Hall hamlet of Erlach above the slope opposite to the estuary.
