Asfendiou ( Greek Ασφενδιού ( n. Sg. )) Is a municipality on the Greek island and municipality of Kos in the South Aegean region with 4094 inhabitants (2011). The 34,500 km² large district of Asfendiou ( Δημοτική Κοινότητα Ασφενδιού Dimotikí Kinótita Asfendioú ) consists of the main town Zipari of four other small villages and an almost deserted hamlet.

The Asfendiou district extends over 34,500 km² in the east of the island of Kos from the flat north coast over the peaks of the Dikeos mountain range to the steep south coast. Neighboring districts are Kos in the east , Pyli in the west and south of the heights of the Dikeos mountain range Kardamena in the southwest.

The main town Zipari is at the EO 1 between Kos and Kefalos located, is situated on the flat north coast Tigaki and west of the Saline Tigaki . At the northern foothills of the Dikeos from east to west are the hamlet of Agios Dimitrios , the village of Asfendiou and to the west of it the twin town of Lagoudi - Zia

Administrative structure and population development

Under the name Asfendiú , the statistical data during the Italian period for the municipality at that time recorded 1965 inhabitants in 1921, 1941 inhabitants for 1931 and 2351 inhabitants for 1936.

After the connection of the Dodecanese to Greece , the rural community Asfendiou ( Κοινότητα Ασφενδιού Kinótita Asfendioú ) was founded in 1948 with the administrative seat Asfendiou and the villages Zipari and Chaichoutes. In 1950 Chaichoutes was renamed Agios Dimitrios . Alyki was first recognized as a settlement in 1951, followed in 1961 by the merger with Tigaki and the recognition of the dual location Lagoudi-Zia . The administrative seat of the rural community changed in 1980 from Asfendiou to Zipari.

With the territorial reform in 1997 , the merger with the rural community of Pyli to form what was then the community of Dikeos . With the implementation of the administrative reform in 2010, this in turn became a district in the municipality of Kos , where Asfendiou has since formed one of six districts.
