biography
Vierthaler started skiing at the age of three and competed in her first races three years later. She graduated from the ski school and ski trade school in Schladming and is a member of the Filzmoos sports club . In 1997 she won the Super G of the Whistler Cup . She contested her first FIS races at the age of 15 in December 1997, and her first victory followed a year later in a slalom . The first use in the European Cup followed in January 1999, after she had won another FIS slalom shortly before. At the Austrian youth championships in 1999 she was able to win in her age group Slalom, Super-G and Combination and was accepted into the ÖSV squad at the end of the season .
From the 2000/01 season she regularly took part in European Cup races, on January 10, 2001, she won her first Super-G in Tignes . At the end of the season she was second in the downhill classification, which gave her a fixed place for the upcoming World Cup season, and sixth in the Super-G classification. In February 2001 Vierthaler participated in the Junior World Championship in Swiss Verbier part and reached its hitherto greatest success: She won the gold medal in the downhill before Maria Holaus and Maria Riesch .
On November 22, 2001, the then 18-year-old took part in a World Cup race for the first time , but could not qualify for the second round in the slalom in Copper Mountain . The first World Cup points followed a week later on the downhill in Lake Louise with 20th place. On January 13th, 2002 she achieved her best World Cup result as ninth in the combination of Saalbach-Hinterglemm , a month later she was 15th on the downhill in Åre . At the end of February 2002 she took part in the Junior World Championships in Tarvisio , Italy , and this time won the silver medal behind Julia Mancuso in the downhill .
In the spring of 2002 Vierthaler tore a cruciate ligament and therefore started in the winter of 2002/03 mainly in the European Cup and FIS races. At the end of the season she surprisingly won the Austrian state champion title in the downhill ahead of Michaela Dorfmeister . In the following season it was only used in the European Cup, but achieved second place in the downhill discipline ranking with one victory and three further podium places and thus a fixed place for the coming World Cup season. In 2004/05 she reached the points in six World Cup runs, her best placements were two 18th places in Cortina d'Ampezzo and San Sicario .
In April 2005, Vierthaler tore a cruciate ligament in his right knee while exercising. In October 2005, she began to ski again , and just a week later she ruptured the cruciate ligament in the same knee while jumping during Super-G training on the Stubai Glacier . After a year without a race, she suffered a torn cruciate ligament in her injured right knee in November 2006. Finally, in December 2006, when she was only 24 years old, she announced her retirement from active ski racing.
