Maria Holaus (born December 19, 1983 in Brixen im Thale ) is a former Austrian ski racer who specialized in the speed disciplines downhill and super-G . In her career, which was interrupted several times by serious injuries, she achieved one victory and two further podiums in the World Cup .

Career

At the age of six, Holaus started with regular training in the ski club in her home town of Brixen and later attended the ski trade school in Stams . As a member of the Tyrolean national squad, she took part in FIS races from the 1998/1999 season after reaching the age limit . In 2000 she was accepted into the squad of the Austrian Ski Association . After the turn of the year 2000/2001, Holaus competed in her first European Cup races , in which she went straight to the top 10. A little later followed her first victory in an FIS race and at the beginning of February she took part in the 2001 Junior World Championships in Verbier , where she won the silver medal in the downhill behind her teammate Astrid Vierthaler . In the same month she became Austrian youth champion in giant slalom in her age group Youth II.

In January 2002 Holaus celebrated her first European Cup victories in two downhill runs in Altenmarkt-Zauchensee , before a series of serious injuries followed. A few days after the European Cup victories, Holaus suffered her first cruciate ligament tear , whereupon she had to end the season prematurely. At the beginning of next winter she made her comeback in two European Cup races in Ål , but in the second of these two giant slaloms she injured her knee again, which is why she had to pause the entire 2002/2003 season. After a one-year break from racing, Holaus took part in two FIS races in Kühtai in December 2003 , but again had to end the season at the beginning after an injury. Another injury in late autumn 2004 put her out of action for the entire 2004/2005 season.

After only four races in the last three and a half years, Holaus remained injury-free for the first time in the 2005/2006 season. She won two FIS races towards the end of winter, celebrated her third European Cup victory a little later in the downhill from Altenmarkt-Zauchensee and ended the season with a downhill victory at the Austrian championships , again in Altenmarkt-Zauchensee. After another victory in the European Cup, the now 23-year-old made her World Cup debut on January 13, 2007 in the downhill from Altenmarkt-Zauchensee . She immediately reached fourth place, which she followed two weeks later in the downhill from San Sicario in third place with her first podium. So she qualified in this discipline within the ÖSV team for the 2007 World Cup in Åre , where she finished 21st.

In the 2007/2008 World Cup season , Holaus initially achieved two more top 10 results, until she celebrated her first World Cup victory in the Super-G in Cortina d'Ampezzo on January 20, 2008 . Two weeks later she finished second behind Tina Maze in the downhill from St. Moritz before she was thrown back again due to injuries. In a fall in the World Cup Super G in Sestriere on February 10, 2008, Holaus suffered a tear in the collateral ligament and a fracture of the head of the shin, whereupon she had to end the season. In the following World Cup winter 2008/2009 , after only four races, she was operated on because of severe pain on both knees. So she could not take part in the 2009 World Cup in Val-d'Isère .

Holaus began her comeback in the 2009/2010 season - as it did last winter - with a fifth place in the Downhill from Lake Louise . Just under a month later, on January 8, 2010, she fell while driving in for the World Cup downhill run in Haus im Ennstal and slipped against a snow cannon, causing a fracture of the right lateral ankle and injuries to the ankle. As a result, she fell out again for the rest of the season and also for the 2010 Winter Olympics . During her injury break, Holaus passed the professional maturity examination and then began training as a midwife . On July 14, 2010, she announced her retirement from top-class sport. She is in a relationship with the former ski racer Josef Schild .
