Atsuko Tanaka ( Japanese 田中 温 子 , Tanaka Atsuko ; born January 25, 1992 in Calgary ) is a Canadian ski jumper who competed for Japan from 2010 to 2012 .

Career

Atsuko Tanaka starts for the Altius Nordic Ski Club . She is the daughter of Japanese immigrants, her father was a ski jumper himself, her mother a cross-country skier. She started ski jumping in 2001 at the age of 10 and has competed internationally since 2004. In June of that year she competed in Park City in her first competition as part of the Ski Jumping Continental Cup , the highest racing series in women's ski jumping at the time, and came in 16th. In August 2005, she achieved her first single-digit result in fourth place in Klingenthal . Between October 2005 and February 2006, the Canadian had her best career so far in the Continental Cup. She achieved single-digit results in five consecutive competitions, including her only victory to date in the Summer Continental Cup in Park City and third place in Lake Placid . Tanaka also won the silver medal behind Juliane Seyfarth at the Junior World Championships in 2006 in Kranj . After that, she was unable to maintain this level of performance until 2008 and only rarely achieved single-digit results. Tanaka had a second phase of good performance in February and March 2008. In Baiersbronn she won her first Continental Cup competition in winter and achieved several other single-digit results. She finished eleventh at the Junior World Championships in Zakopane . In the 2008/09 season she only got two top ten placements. In Parc City she was 9th and in Toblach 10th. At the Junior World Championships in Štrbské Pleso , she did not appear. In the 2009/10 season she only appeared in the Continental Cups in Schonach and in Zaō and at the Junior World Championships in Hinterzarten , where she was 20th.

From 2010 to 2012 she jumped for Japan and competed for the Hokusho University ski club . She entered in the 2010/11 season only in Zaō and finished 7th. In addition, she entered the Junior World Championships 2011 in Otepää and finished 19th in the individual jumping. The team competition had to be canceled. She has been back for the Canadian Ski Association since 2012.

At the Canadian Championships in Whistler , she won gold in the normal and large hill competitions in 2013 ahead of Alexandra Pretorius and last year's winner Taylor Henrich .

At the Olympic premiere of women's ski jumping, she finished twelfth, making her the best Canadian.
