The Aubonne is an approximately 12 km long tributary of Lake Geneva in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland . It drains a section of the western edge zone of the Waadtländer Mittelland and the adjacent Jura and belongs to the catchment area of the Rhone . The area of the catchment area of the Aubonne is 96.3 km². The first documentary mention of the water was already in 1005 under the name Albunna .

geography

course

The source of the Aubonne is located near Bière at around 680  m above sea level. M. in a valley at the southern foot of the Jura . This karst spring is fed by rainwater that seeps into the karst subsoil on the heights of the Jura . Therefore, the effective river catchment area is much larger than would be expected based on the surface structures. Calculations based on annual precipitation and runoff indicate a catchment area with a size of more than 210 km². It would be more than twice as large as the area given by the topography .

After the source, the Aubonne first flows eastwards, quickly sinks into the plateau at the foot of the Jura and then draws an arc to the south. After about three kilometers, the Toleure flows from the right , which is also cut deep into the plateau and generally carries more water than the Aubonne. The Toleure also rises as a karst spring at the foot of the Jura and draws water from across the ridge of the first Jura chain. An important tributary of the Toleure is the Saubrette , which has its source at Saint-George and forms the longest surface watercourse in the Aubonne system.

Below this confluence, the Aubonne turns to the south-east, breaking through the surrounding heights of the Jura foot plateau in an erosion valley up to 150 meters deep . In this valley lies the Aubonne arboretum . The Aubonne flows with a constant gradient of around three percent towards Lake Geneva and reaches the lower part of the Lake Geneva basin near the town of Aubonne . Here, too, the stream bed is located in a valley, the slopes of which are covered with vines . South of Aubonne, the river flows into Lake Geneva at Allaman , and in the course of time it has pushed an alluvial cone around one kilometer wide into the lake.

In addition to the Toleure, the Sandoleyre and the Malarmary are worth mentioning as side streams. The mean flow rate at the mouth is about 5.8 m³ / s. The Aubonne has a near-natural, partly naturally designed stream bed over long stretches.

Tributaries

use

In the past, the water power of the Aubonne was used to operate mills and sawmills in various places. Below the mouth of the Toleure, the Aubonne near Les Vaux is dammed into a small lake (53,500 m³ water content). The hydroelectric power station of the Société électrique des forces de l'Aubonne (SEFA) is located near Aubonne. The river drives the Aubonne powder mill .
