The Augsburger Müllberg , also called Augsburger Schuttberg , is an artificial elevation in the north of the Augsburg city area. The pile of rubble from the Augsburg-Nord landfill rises around 55 meters from its surroundings, which are around 457 meters above sea level, up to a height of 512 meters.

location

The 420,000 m² former garbage dump is located in the Augsburg-Firnhaberau district to the northeast, next to the A 8 motorway bridge over the Lech, which was renovated in 2007 . The area is on the Augsburg floor, but the landowner is largely the city of Gersthofen .

The Lech flows past the landfill immediately to the west. It has a weir exactly at the level of the garbage dump , in front of which the Lech Canal, which is parallel to the Lech, is diverted to the left and there is a Lechwerke operating point . The area to the west, beyond the Lech, belongs to Gersthofen, the area to the north, east and south of the garbage mountain belongs to Augsburg. In the south, the Autobahn 8 and the nature reserve Firnhaberauheide borders. Northwest of the mountain is the Europaweiher , a small lake.

The rubble lies in the approach path of the Augsburg airfield . For this reason there are signs on its summit that read “Attention flight operations”.

history

The landfill was created after the Second World War by backfilling the quarry ponds with debris from the Second World War, which was then used as a household garbage dump for decades . Since 1996 household waste from the districts of Augsburg and Aichach-Friedberg as well as the city of Augsburg has been treated in the nearby Augsburg waste recycling plant .

In 2006 a license agreement between the cities of Augsburg and Gersthofen expired. Since then, waste from landfill class I has been backfilled, for example street sweepings , insulation materials and asbestos panels .

Pollution and renaturation

From the landfill went up in the 1980s by the strong pollution a high risk for the groundwater from. Years ago, seepage from the landfill still flowed into the Lech , as it was not sealed.

Extensive renovation , recultivation and renaturation measures therefore began . In order to reduce the leaching of toxins, the mountain of rubbish was covered with a layer of clay between 1988 and 1996 and a 2 m thick layer of soil was applied. On the mountain, 17 hectares of rough meadows , dry and gravel soil locations were created (sheep grazing) and at the foot of the landfill biotope structures with alternating moisture were created .

On December 20, 2016, part of the mountain was opened to the public by the city of Augsburg as a panoramic mountain and a local recreation area . Hiking trails with a length of 2,400 meters have been laid out on the site . At the opening there was an event in which some representatives from the cities of Augsburg and Gersthofen took part.

The entrances are at the end of the Jagdweg in the Firnhaberau and near the Europaweiher. The turnstiles are open daily in the winter months (November to March) from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and from April to October from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. From there you can reach the summit of the Schuttberg via three routes. The well-developed paths are also suitable for a walk with a stroller or wheelchair.

From Augsburg's garbage dump you have a good view of Gersthofen and Augsburg, of the A 8, the motorway bridge, the Lech, the Augsburg airfield, and with a good view of the Alps.

Energy generation

After extensive renovation measures, electricity is now being generated from the landfill gas . The landfill gas power plant of the Lech-Elektrizitätswerke (LEW) consists of three Otto - gas engines with coupled generator . With a peak output of 2,060 kW, the electricity needs of around 750 private households can be covered.

Europaweiher

The open-air cinema Lechflimmern took place earlier in summer on a floating stage near the Europaweiher at the northern foot of the garbage mountain . Due to fewer sponsors and the dilapidated floating stage, the facilities required for this were dismantled again in 2009.
