August (Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Norburg-Plön)
August von Schleswig-Holstein-Norburg-Plön ( May 9, 1635 - September 17, 1699 in Plön ) was the divided duke of a small part of the Duchy of Schleswig around Nordborg Castle on the island of Alsen and donated the Schleswig-Holstein line -Norburg-Plön.
Life
August was the second son of Joachim Ernst and Dorothea Augusta von Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf , the daughter of the Prince-Bishop of Lübeck Johann Adolf . From 1645 to 1650 he made a grand tour of European countries with his one year older brother Johann Adolf , which took him to England and France , among others .
He became an officer in the Brandenburg-Prussian service and on August 20, 1664 Kurbrandenburg General of the Infantry . At the same time he was appointed governor of Magdeburg . On September 18, 1665, due to his bravery in the battles with the Turks, he was eligible for governorship of the Principality of Minden . On December 21, 1674 he was appointed General Feldzeugmeister in Brandenburg . On May 29, 1676 he was awarded the Elephant Order in Copenhagen . On July 7, 1676, the island of Usedom was given to him for his loyal service in the Northern War , which was, however, given back to Sweden in the Peace of Saint-Germain in 1679 . Instead, he received the Duchy of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Norburg from the Danish king , whose last duke, Johann Bogislaw , who went bankrupt in 1669, had died shortly before. After the death of the Great Elector in 1688 he resigned from the Brandenburg service and moved back to Norburg.
His eldest son Joachim Friedrich inherited the Duchy of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Plön in 1699 Norburg and in 1706 because both the son and grandson of his uncle Johann Adolf had died early.
