August Bauer
August Bauer (born November 14, 1868 in Düsseldorf ; † August 9, 1961 there ) was a German sculptor .
Life
August Bauer, son of master carpenter Peter Bauer (1832–1901) and Wilhelmine (1833–1910), attended the Düsseldorf School of Applied Arts after completing an apprenticeship and studied wood carving and ornamental and figural modeling with Clemens Buscher . There he received a scholarship from the city fund for his achievements in the years 1887 to winter 1888/1889. In 1889 Bauer went to Berlin, where he joined Otto Lessing's studio and at the same time attended the school of the Kunstgewerbemuseum . From 1892 he studied at the Royal Academy of Arts , there under Peter Breuer , Ernst Herter and Gerhard Janensch .
When Bismarck's 80th birthday was approaching in 1895, the “Association of Düsseldorf Citizens for the Construction of a Bismarck Monument in Düsseldorf” was launched on March 19, 1895. It was decided to place the Bismarck memorial in sight of the Kaiser Wilhelm memorial , which had been inaugurated a few years earlier, in front of the art gallery on Alleestrasse . Finally, a general competition was held. By the deadline for submitting the tender on February 1, 1896, a total of 40 designs by 36 artists had been submitted. A first prize was not awarded, the second, endowed with 3,000 marks , went to the design by August Bauer and Johannes Röttger from Berlin under the motto “In patria” (For the Fatherland). However, they had to revise the base design before they were allowed to start building the monument. Bauer and Röttger changed their sketch under artistic observation and were able to start work on the Bismarck monument on May 18, 1897. The bronze casting took place in the Lauchhammer art foundry . The completion and construction of the statue was taken over by the Düsseldorf company "Opderbecke & Neese" from April 4, 1899. The inauguration ceremony of the Bismarck monument in Düsseldorf took place on May 10, 1899.
Back in Düsseldorf, from the winter semester of 1902/1903 to the summer semester of 1903, Bauer temporarily took over the sculpture class at the Kunstgewerbeschule, rented a studio at Goethestrasse 63 and immediately moved into his house at Grafenberger Allee 32/34, where the painters around 1904 Hugo Zieger and Richard Vogts had their painting studios.
When the Girardet Bridge over the city moat on Königsallee became dilapidated at the beginning of the 20th century , it was renewed in 1905/1906. August Bauer took on the artistic design of the stone bridge construction with different gargoyles. In a mask, August Bauer, who is described as humorous and cheerful, is said to have created an eternal memory even with a mustache.
Around 1906, Bauer was commissioned to model all the facade ornaments, including the figures of the main gable, at the Düsseldorf Higher Regional Court , Cecilienallee 4.
Until 1935, August Bauer owned the house at Grafenberger Allee 32/34, in which he rented two studios to sculptors and rooms to painters, including Josef Körschgen and Gregor von Bochmann . Around 1936 Richard Vogt, director of the "Eos & Excelsior Deutsche Volks- und Lebensversicherungs-AG", became the owner of the house; Bauer still had his studio in the rear building for a year. From 1935 August Bauer lived in the family house, built by his younger brother Richard Bauer , Am Wehrhahn 97, which was between Worringer Strasse and the railway overpass.
August Bauer was a member of the paint box and of today's association for the promotion of sculpture in North Rhine-Westphalia , from 1904 to 1912 secretary.
His oeuvre includes public monuments, building-related sculptures and a large number of grave monuments, but also a number of small sculptures, mostly made of bronze.
family
August Bauer was married to Gustel (* June 10, 1880; † June 20, 1959), daughter of the industrialist Peter Klein. The grave of the sculptor's family is in the north cemetery in Düsseldorf .
