August Bromeis (born November 28, 1813 in Wilhelmshöhe near Kassel , † January 12, 1881 in Kassel) was a German painter .

Life

August Bromeis was supposed to become an architect like his father Johann Conrad Bromeis , but he preferred painting. He made his first studies at the academy in Kassel . In 1831 he moved to the Art Academy in Munich , where he continued his education under Leo von Klenze , Friedrich von Gärtner and Domenico Quaglio and was greatly encouraged and influenced by Christian Morgenstern and Eduard Schleich .

In 1833 Bromeis emigrated to Rome , where he stayed for 15 years, founded the German Artists' Association with others and, in particular, joined Joseph Anton Koch , the restorer of the stylistic landscape. He remained true to this direction in further life. After returning to Germany, he lived in Frankfurt am Main for a while . In 1857 he settled in Düsseldorf . There he became a member of the artists' association Malkasten . In 1867 Bromeis accepted a position at the academy in Kassel, where he taught until the end of his life.

reception

His atmospheric landscapes from both Italy and Germany are stylishly composed, but strive more for the overall impression of nature than for a precise reproduction of the individual.
