August Emanuel Fürnrohr

August Emanuel Fürnrohr (born July 27, 1804 in Regensburg ; † May 6, 1861 there ) was a Bavarian , German botanist and natural historian. Its official botanical author abbreviation is “ Fürnr. "

Life

After attending a grammar school in Regensburg, Fürnrohr learned the profession of pharmacist and practiced it in his hometown and during his stays in Munich and Zweibrücken as well as with interruptions until 1833. From 1824 to 1826 he studied botany , chemistry , mineralogy and geognosy at the University of Erlangen . His interest in botany was largely promoted by David Heinrich Hoppe . In 1833 he became a teacher of natural history, chemistry and technology at the district agricultural and trade school (later secondary school) in Regensburg.

In 1839 he became a professor at the Regensburg Lyceum. In 1840 he became secretary of the Royal Bavarian Botanical Society in Regensburg and after the death of Hoppe in 1846 its director.

From 1842 to 1861 he was the sole editor of the botanical journal Flora .

Fürnberg was the author of several textbooks on natural history and chemistry as well as essays on native flora . In 1835 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina . In 1859 he was accepted as a corresponding member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences .

Honors

He had been an honorary doctor from the University of Erlangen since 1833. The plant genus Fuernrohria K. Koch from the umbelliferae family (Apiaceae) is named after him .
