August Flockemann

August Friedrich Christoph Flockemann (born April 6, 1849 in Hiddestorf near Hanover , † July 17, 1915 in Oberlößnitz ) was a German sculptor .

life and work

As the son of a master craftsman, Flockemann first learned the trade of a carpenter . In 1867 he studied at the Dresden Art Academy and in 1867 became a student of the sculptor Hermann Narten in Hanover. As a wood sculptor, he worked on the restoration work in Güstrow Cathedral .

In 1870 he went to Berlin , where he received a scholarship from Friedrich Eggers until 1872. From 1874 Flockemann worked independently and designed fountains and ensembles of figures for public places in Dresden, Berlin and Hanover. Flockemann also made several sculptures in Glienig Castle in the Steinreich community ( Dahme-Spreewald district ). His portraits, which he modeled from nature, and statuettes, including those of Kaiser Wilhelm I (1880), became more popular. Flockemann was also active in the arts and crafts.

He took part in the Academy Art Exhibition in 1880, the German Art Exhibition in 1899 and the Great Art Exhibition in 1904 in Dresden.

In 1915 Flockemann lived in an apartment in the tenement house he owned in the former Grunaer Strasse 49 (corner house at the corner of Blochmannstrasse, formerly opposite the Ehrlich pen , today destroyed and rebuilt with Blochmannstrasse 1 ). At the same time, he or his wife Margarete owned the Meinhold wine estate as a summer residence in Oberlößnitz , where he also died.
