August Christian Friedrich Graf von der Schulenburg (born March 23, 1754 in Bleckede , † August 22, 1833 in Mirow ) was a Mecklenburg-Strelitz Chamberlain and Legation Councilor. His library formed the basis of the state library of Mecklenburg-Strelitz in Neustrelitz .

Life

August von der Schulenburg came from the Hehlen House of the white line of the Lower Saxon noble family von der Schulenburg ; he was the second child and eldest son of Colonel Christian Hieronymus Adolph von der Schulenburg (1717–1773) and his wife Sophie Charlotte, née Freiin von Bülow († 1778).

From 1769 to 1773 he was a pupil of the Knight Academy in Lüneburg . Unlike most of the other male family members, he did not pursue an officer career, but devoted himself to studying science, especially history and geography, at the University of Göttingen . Around 1780 he entered the service of the Duchy of Mecklenburg-Strelitz and became Chamberlain and Privy Legation Councilor.

As the heir of the Mecklenburg part of the Hehlen Fideikommiss, he was Majoratsherr auf Groß Krankow with Petersdorf, Köchelsdorff and Tressow (today districts of Bobitz ), which, however, had been in bankruptcy administration since 1771 and was the subject of a protracted legal dispute before the Reich Chamber of Commerce . So in 1796 he was forced to cede his succession rights in return for an annuity to the main creditors August Friedrich von Lowtzow (1749-1820) and von Hammerstein. His relatives challenged his authority to do so in court.

In the same year 1796, Duke Karl II acquired his extensive library for Neustrelitz Castle and, together with his private library, made it the basis of a publicly accessible (regional) library. Schulenburg remained as supervisor of the library in Neustrelitz until 1805 . From 1800 he was the editor of the Ducal Mecklenburg-Strelitz State Calendar . 1805/06 he lived in Itzehoe , then in Copenhagen with his brother, the general in the Danish service Georg Ludwig von der Schulenburg (1755-1828). He later returned to Mecklenburg-Strelitz and spent his twilight years in Mirow. In 1831 he published his correspondence with the Leipzig bookseller and publisher Paul Gotthelf Kummer .

He remained unmarried. Heir von Groß Krankow, which came back to the family in 1822 through a settlement from the bankruptcy administration, became his nephew, the Danish cavalry master Carl Otto Friedrich von der Schulenburg (1801–1847). However, due to the necessary debt settlement, he was only able to take over the estate in November 1843.
