Augusto Carlos Teixeira de Aragão (born June 15, 1823 in Lisbon , † April 29, 1903 ibid) was a Portuguese military doctor , numismatist , antiquarian and historian . As an officer in the Portuguese army, he achieved the rank of general . He is considered one of the "fathers of numismatics" in Portugal.

biography

Aragão was the son of José Maria Teixeira Aragão and his wife Mariana Hermogenes da Silva. He studied medicine and was Cirurgião-mór-em-chefe in the Portuguese Army.

He started as a surgeon in the parish of Melides in the county of Santiago do Cacém . He took care of the sick and helped the needy and those affected by the dysentery epidemic that occurred there in 1849 .

Early on he dedicated himself to collecting coins. His extraordinary intellectual abilities, combined with his friendship with Louis I of Portugal , allowed him to work intensively in this field of science.

In the 1860s he was responsible for the work on the excavation site of the rediscovered Roman city of Balsa near Tavira .

Numerous offices

In 1867, as Chancellor of the Office of the National Palace in Ajuda , he was responsible for the organization, cataloging and exhibition of the "Museu de Antiguidades da Ajuda", where you can find pieces of great value from the treasury of the Portuguese royal family, the abandoned monasteries and from Gathered individuals. He also arranged for new pieces to be acquired. In performing these tasks, he was also entrusted with the task of exhibiting objects from the Portuguese royal collection at the Paris World Exhibition in 1867 , and the “Commission de l'histoire du travail”. During the duration of the exhibition, he had the opportunity to come into contact with the world's most renowned figures in the field of numismatics.

In 1870 he published the work Descrição Histórica das Moedas Romanas Existentes no Gabinete Numismático de sua Majestade El-Rei O Senhor D. Luiz . A year later he became a corresponding member of the Brazilian "Instituto Histórico e Geográfico Brasileiro", as his work had been positively assessed by the "Comissão de Archeologia e Ethnographia".

In 1874 he joined the "Sociedade Histórica da Independência de Portugal" and took over the post of Vice Treasurer of the "Comissão Central 1º de Dezembro 1640".

In 1875 he published the first of three volumes of the monumental work Descrição Geral e Histórica das Moedas Cunhadas em Nome dos Reis, Regentes e Governadores de Portugal . Teixeira de Aragão had planned a fourth volume of this work, which should also include the coins of Brazil and Portuguese West Africa , the volume was no longer realized.

In the same year he was appointed by the government to implement a reform in the commission of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in order to link museums with monument protection and archeology . During this time he reproduced the exact design of the Medalha de Olhão , which had been given by the inhabitants of the city of Olhão to the then Prince Regent D. João and later King Dom João VI de Portugal .

He was elected to the History and Archeology Section of the Royal Academy of Sciences in Lisbon (Academia das Ciências de Lisboa) on December 28, 1876 .

In 1877 he took part in the archaeological conference of Citânia de Briteiros in Guimarães .

In 1880 he became a member of the commission of the "Real Associação dos Architectos Civis e Archeologos Portuguezes" (RAACAP); their main task was the question of the relevance of the objects in the exhibitions, as well as the management of historical monuments.

In 1881 he was a member of the organizing committee for the exhibition of Spanish and Portuguese decorative arts at the South Kensington Museum in London .

In 1885 he became director of the Central Military Hospital of Tavira .

He was a member of the Geographical Society of Lisbon, the Société Française de Numismatique and the committee of the Antiquities Collection of the Real Academia de la Historia de Madrid. In Brazil he was admitted as a consultant to the Institute of History and Geography of São Paulo .
