Aunkofen is a district of the city of Abensberg in the Kelheim district in Lower Bavaria .

location

The church village forms the westernmost tip of the urban area of the city of Abensberg, pointing into the broad Abenstal . Regensburg is about 35 km to the east, Ingolstadt 40 km to the west. Munich is about 95 kilometers south of the town.

history

The place was first mentioned in a document in the 9th century, when the subdeacon "Mathari" received his fiefdom to "Quuanashouon" (= Aunkofen) from "Bishop Asbert" to Regensburg (891-894). In a tradition of the Weltenburg monastery from 1128, properties of the monastery in the village are called "Awenshoven".

Aunkofen, as well as the Abensberg settlement itself, belonged to the original parish of Gögging for many centuries , which was mentioned in a document as a pastoral care office as early as 575. In 1380 the previous Abensberg branch with the villages of Aunkofen, Schwaighausen and Harladen became an independent parish. Before the parish church of St. Barbara was built, the "Liebfrauenkirche" in Aunkofen served as the first parish church in Abensberg. The building of today's inn of Aunkofen was formerly the summer residence with gardening of the Carmelite monastery of Abensberg.

Already in 1939, well before the regional reform in the 1970s, Aunkofen lost its political independence when it was incorporated into the city of Abensberg.

The Liebfrauenkirche was first mentioned in a document in 1362. However, it can be assumed that it was built around the year 1000. It is of Romanesque origin. However, the choir and tower were not built until around 1450.

Economy and Infrastructure

Structurally, the village has merged with the town of Abensberg to such an extent that it can hardly be perceived as a spatially independent settlement. The farms have almost completely disappeared. The place is home to some commercial operations, otherwise there is predominantly residential development. Aunkofen is on the Regensburg – Ingolstadt railway line .
