Austin Lee Basis (born September 14, 1976 in Brooklyn , New York , USA ) is an American actor.

Private

Basis grew up in the small beach community of Sea Gate, at the end of the famous Coney Island boardwalk in Brooklyn, New York. His mother Shari was a teacher for over 30 years. His father Arthur has been managing a meat distribution company for almost 20 years. He has a younger brother, Jeremy, who is also a teacher.

In his spare time he enjoys drawing and writing poetry. Austin Basis fell ill with type 1 diabetes at an early age and is publicly committed to educating people about the disease.

Career

From a very young age, Austin felt at home in the spotlight, enjoyed entertaining people and making people laugh - but he actually dreamed of playing as a catcher for the New York Mets (Major League Baseball). When it became clear that biology and genetics were working together to prevent this from happening, Austin turned his attention to a new dream job: he wanted to become a doctor.

During his childhood, Austin played in various plays, especially musicals - despite his lack of singing talent. From his first role as "The Sun" in kindergarten, the title role as Dracula in a junior high school production of "Young Dracula", as a dentist in a summer camp version of " The Little Shop of Horrors ", to the role of Stanley in "Brighton Beach Memoirs" - his first own production in college - presented the course of Austin's future with increasing clarity.

Austin then began his theater studies at Binghamton University . He played in addition to various in-house productions a. a. the title roles of "Rosencrantz & Guildenstern are Dead" and "I Hate Hamlet". He continued his education at Actors Studio Drama School , where he graduated with an MFA in acting.

Soon after graduating, Austin became a lifelong member of the Actors Studio. There he had the privilege of working with the likes of Al Pacino , Faye Dunaway and Estelle Parsons , and under the direction of Ellen Burstyn , Harvey Keitel , Arthur Penn and Lee Grant .

Austin was an unsuccessful actor in New York for a couple of years. He worked as a bartender, bouncer, assistant, waiter and assistant teacher for a living while continuing to take classes to improve his audition skills. He worked by the hour at the Actors Studio Drama School and starred in a number of independent and student films and off-off Broadway plays. In addition, he designed an improvisation and sketch comedy show called "Mmm ... Comedy", which ran for 7 months.

Austin's television debut was in the Comedy Central film Porn 'n Chicken . His breakthrough came in 2004 when he starred in an episode of Criminal Intent . Austin then got a role in a Warner Brothers pilot for FOX called Spellbound, starring Christine Baranski , Barry Bostwick and Dave Annable . He soon moved to Los Angeles for good and began making a living as an actor.

Austin has also enjoyed a commercially successful career, having appeared in commercials for Toys "R" Us , Wendys, Dr. Pepper , State Farm and Burger King will perform.

Since 2012 he has appeared as JT Forbes in the US television series Beauty and the Beast alongside Kristin Kreuk and Jay Ryan .
