  • In planning
  • The Autoput A4 is a completely completed motorway in Serbia since 2019 . It leads from the A1 near Niš via Pirot to the Bulgarian border near Dimitrovgrad , where in future it will merge with the Bulgarian A6 , which will continue to Sofia . With reference to the European road number , the motorway is also referred to as E-80 by the Serbian authorities . The motorway is part of the Pan-European Transport Corridor X (Branch C).

Until the renumbering of the Serbian road network in 2013, the A4 was referred to as the M5.

    meaning

Until October 2019, only a two-lane trunk road connected the city of Niš with the border town of Dimitrovgrad. This route dates back to the times of Yugoslavia and has been expanded sporadically. Today the trunk road is an important transport link from Central Europe to the Middle East , although the Pan-European Transport Corridor IV through Bulgaria and Romania has recently become more and more important and transit traffic is shifting to this route. That is why the government is pushing ahead with the construction of the motorway from Niš to Dimitrovgrad in order not to generate more income, e.g. B. in the area of tolls to lose.

    Construction progress

The motorway has been completed from the motorway intersection with the A1 autoput near Niš to the border crossing at Dimitrovgrad .

The construction of the 86.9 km long motorway from Niš to Dimitrovgrad should start as early as November 2009. Since the motorway will run through mountainous areas and the narrow valley of the Nišava River , the construction costs are correspondingly high: the motorway is expected to cost an estimated 450 million euros. Serbia has already received 388 million euros of this as a loan from the World Bank . The original plan was for all sections to be ready by the end of 2016 (as of 2015).

The section has been broken down into six subsections:

    • Prosek - Crvena Reka (22.5 km)
This subsection has been broken down into three parts. The first runs from Prosek to the Bancarevo tunnel (9.4 km), the second from the Bancarevo tunnel to the village of Crvena Reka (13.1 km) and the third consists of the Bancarevo tunnel itself (750 m). The Greek consortium of the construction companies Aktor SA and Terna SA won the tenders for the construction of the first two sections, the Czech company Subterra as for the construction of the tunnel. The construction costs for the first two sections amount to 6.7 billion RSD (approx. 59 million euros ), for the third section 2.2 billion RSD (approx. 38 million euros). Construction began on March 15, 2012. Completion was scheduled for March 2014, but was later postponed to 2016. The section of the motorway was opened on November 9, 2019.
    • Crvena Reka - Čiflik (12.7 km)
The construction contract was signed on October 10, 2011 with the Greek construction company Aktor SA . The construction costs were set at 4.4 billion RSD (approx. 38 million euros ). The construction time should be 18 months. Completion was scheduled for April 2013. Due to construction delays, the completion was extended to October 2014, which could also not be met. The section was finally opened to traffic on December 30, 2015.
    • Čiflik - Staničenje (12.07 km)
The contract for the construction was signed on June 20, 2013. The Spanish construction company Construcciones Rubau SA won the tender. The construction costs amount to 3.75 billion RSD (approx. 33 million EUR). Completion was planned for December 25, 2016 and finally took place in July 2017.
    • Staničenje - Pirot -istok (-East) (16.64 km)
The contract for the construction was signed on June 20, 2013. The Greek construction company Aktor SA won the tender. The construction costs amount to 8.38 billion RSD (approx. 73 million EUR). Completion was planned for December 30, 2016, but has not yet taken place (as of August 2017).
    • Pirot-istok (-East) - Dimitrovgrad (14.3 km)
The first tender took place in 2010 and was won by the Austrian construction company Alpine Bau . The contract was signed on November 24, 2010. The construction costs were put at 3.45 billion RSD (approx. 30 million EUR). The completion should take place after 18 months in April 2012. Due to construction delays, the company was granted an extension to the end of 2012. After the construction company went bankrupt, the investor canceled the construction contract on August 6, 2013. On November 15, 2013, another tender for the continuation of the construction work was launched. The construction time should be 15 months. On May 5, 2014, the contract for the continuation of construction work with the Bulgarian construction company Trace Group Hold plc. signed. Completion was planned for June 17, 2016, but did not take place until September 2017.
    • Dimitrovgrad bypass (8.6 km)
The section was divided into three parts. The first two partial orders include the construction of roadways and bridges, the third the Progon and Pržojna Padina tunnels (together 1.66 km).
      • The construction contracts for the first two partial orders were signed with Alpine Bau on April 14, 2010 . The construction costs should amount to 3.57 billion RSD (approx. 31 million EUR). Completion was scheduled for April 2012. Due to construction delays, completion was extended to the end of 2014. On August 6, 2013, both construction contracts were terminated after the construction company went bankrupt. The tender for the continuation of the construction work began on April 25, 2014. The two sections were opened to traffic in September 2017.
      • The contract for the third partial order was signed with the Greek construction company Terna SA on October 10, 2011 with construction costs of RSD 3.83 billion (approx. EUR 33 million). Completion was planned for October 2013 after a two-year construction period. Due to construction delays, completion was initially extended to summer 2014 and then to the end of 2015. The section was previously opened in September 2017, the last parts were completed in March 2018.
