Career

Club

Avihu Sorotzky began his career as an ice hockey player with HC Metulla . After a total of eleven years in the northernmost town in Israel, he moved to HC Ma'alot in 2009 . Although he was able to win the Israeli championship title straight away with the team from the vicinity of Naharija , he went back to Metulla after a year. In the following season he was able to win the title with this club. Sorotzky has been playing for Maccabi Metulla , the ice hockey team of the Canada Israel Hockey School in Metulla, since 2012 .

National team

Sorotzky has already participated in the U-18 and U-20 World Championships for Israel. He was in the squad of the men's national team for the first time at the 2007 World Cup , but was not used in the Division II tournament. His first appearances in the team with the Star of David on his chest came at the 2008 World Cup . There he played, as in the following World Championships in 2009 and 2010 in Division II. The Israeli team finished last in Division II in 2010 without a point. The negative highlight of the tournament was a 20-20 defeat against Romania at Sorotzky was replaced after 28 minutes at 0:11. Despite this personal debacle, he was also nominated for the 2011 World Cup , in which the Israelis had to compete in the lowest class for the first time in eleven years. There he played all four games and rose with his team after a 6: 5 win after extra time against hosts South Africa again in Division II. He himself made a significant contribution to this with the second-best catch quota and the second lowest goal against goals (behind the South African David Berger ). In 2012 and 2013 he played again in Division II. In 2013, he was voted the best goalkeeper in Group B and, with his catch rate of over 90%, made a decisive contribution to the promotion of the Israelis to Group A in Division II. He started there with his team in 2014 , but had to accept immediate relegation despite a win against Australia and a defeat after extra time and penalty shootouts.

Sorotzky was also in action for Israel in the Olympic qualification for the Games in Sochi 2014, where in the pre-qualification in September 2012 in Zagreb after defeats against Serbia , Croatia and Mexico it only reached last place.
