The Bärwalder See (also known as Bärwalde storage facility , Bjerwałdski jězor in Upper Sorbian ) is the largest lake in Saxony and the third largest lake in the Lusatian Lakeland with an area of 13 km² . It is located in the Upper Lusatian community Boxberg / OL between the places Boxberg , Klitten and Uhyst . The eponymous place Bärwalde is north of the lake.

Bärwalder See is located in the Bärwalder See landscape park, a post-mining landscape that is being recultivated by the LMBV . The lake itself is the remaining hole in the Bärwalde opencast mine . Its flooding began on November 13, 1997 and should be completed by 2007. A lack of precipitation has delayed this goal several times. In April 2008 the lower weir was reached for the first time at 123 meters above sea level and a year later, in April 2009, the upper weir at 125 meters. As a result, the actual flooding is ended when the full water level is reached for the first time. The lake is fed by the Spree , the Schulenburg Canal and the Dürrbacher Fließ. Some of the water flows back into the Spree via the Schwarzen Schöps .

The name Bärwalde storage facility indicates that the lake has the function of a water management storage basin. In addition to the Lohsa II storage basin to the north-west, 25 million m³ of the 174 million m³ of water (maximum volume ) are available. This makes the Bärwalder See, measured in terms of usable storage space, the sixth largest storage lake in Saxony. The Bärwalde and Lohsa II storage facilities serve, among other things, to supply the Boxberg power plant with process water and to regulate the water level of the Spree. The latter is particularly necessary for an adequate water supply in the Spreewald Biosphere Reserve and in Berlin.

tourism

Landscaping ear

The Bärwalder See is used for tourism by the municipality of Boxberg / OL, an expansion of the existing possibilities is being intensively promoted.

According to the structural concept from 2003, the lake is divided into three development areas belonging to the municipality of Boxberg / OL: Boxberger, Klittener and Uhyster Ufer. A port with around 90 water berths and numerous land berths and two jetties have already been implemented. The 7.20 m high lighthouse Marina Klitten shows water sports enthusiasts the way to the port and ensures the necessary safety. Further infrastructural investments, a camping site with caravan parking spaces and holiday homes (star camp), a tourism information center and other maritime-tourist business settlements are in the process of being realized. About 6 km of textile, nudist, dog and surf beach areas can already be used.

The annual light and sound festival transNATURALE has been taking place since 2005 . Some exhibits from past events remained on site after the festival. For example, the plastic POLARSTERNROHR α UMi by Roland Fuhrmann or EX SORABIA by Rupprecht Matthies.

There is a game reserve near the western shore, north of Uhyst; The Upper Lusatian Heath and Pond Landscape Biosphere Reserve is attached to the lake . A few kilometers north of the lake, the Lusatian foundling park Nochten was built. This landscape park was created from boulders that were found in open-cast mining and designed with heather and heather plants from Scandinavia.

South of Boxberg, based on an idea by the Warsaw artist Jarosław Kozakiewicz, a hilly landscape was created from around 100,000 cubic meters of earth , which - viewed from the air - resembles a human ear. The accessible ear is around 350 meters long, 250 meters wide and 18 meters high. At the highest point of the auricle there is a viewing platform that allows a wide view of the lake and the power station. Inside the ear, the theater was built in the OHR .

For the safety of the water sports enthusiasts on the approx. 1300 hectare lake, among others, the volunteers of the DLRG district Weißwasser and the lifeguards of the water watch local group Boxberg from the DRK district association Weißwasser e. V.

In the vicinity of the former Klitten village of Jasua , which was devastated for open-cast mining , an extensive tourist infrastructure is being developed. The water sports center with marina, DLRG and supply facilities (snack bar, toilet, showers) has already been realized. A rescue station and a campsite are under construction.
