In the 19th century the place had mostly between 300 and 400 inhabitants. The phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the loss of jobs due to the mechanization of agriculture have led to a significant population decline since then, but this has turned into slight growth again since the 1960s due to the increasing tourism in the region.

economy

Up to the present day agriculture plays the biggest role in the economic life of the community: The viticulture that was formerly also practiced here was, however, completely abandoned after the phylloxera crisis; Tobacco and maize are also on the decline - instead, fields and pastures, but also walnuts , chestnuts and fruit trees dominate the region. Also, foie gras and truffles are among the best regional cuisine. Some vacant houses are rented out as holiday apartments ( gîtes ).

history

The Château du Thon was the seat of the local landlord ( seigneur ) in the Middle Ages and early modern times .

On January 1, 2017, the municipality of Bézenac merged with Castels to form the new municipality of Castels et Bézenac.

Attractions

  • The Saint-Pierre-es-Liens church is a single-nave building from the 12th century, but was thoroughly redesigned after the end of the Hundred Years War (1337-1453). The small portal porch and perhaps the bell gable rising above it also date from this time .
  • In its present form, the Château du Thon mainly dates from the 17th century. In its immediate vicinity there is still a cubic dovecote with a pyramid roof . The complex is privately owned and was recognized as a Monument historique in 1981 .
