Location of Büchelberg in Rhineland-Palatinate

With around 900 inhabitants, Büchelberg is the smallest district in the city of Wörth am Rhein and is located in the district of Germersheim in Rhineland-Palatinate . Before the incorporation, Büchelberg was the largest place in Rhineland-Palatinate with 10,076 hectares of municipal area, as 9,760 hectares of the Bienwald belonged to the place.

Geographical location

The place is located in the southeastern corner of Rhineland-Palatinate on a small clearing island in the middle of the Bienwald.

history

Surname

The place name is derived from the Büchelberg, a beech-covered limestone hill in the Bienwald. The local name in dialect is "Bichlbe'ch" or "Bich'lbärch", where "Biechel" is the name for a young beech. In the 18th century, different spellings are documented in addition to Büchelberg: Buhelberg, Bichelberg, Bigelberg, Bickelberg, Pigelberg and Büglberg.

Early history

Using aerial archaeological methods, the ground plan of a Roman courtyard near Büchelberg could be verified.

Village foundation

The founding of the village of Büchelberg is related to the construction of the Fort-Louis fortress in the years 1687 to 1688, commissioned by the French Minister of War Louvois under King Louis XIV. The lime required for the fortress construction was mined and burned in the Bienwald. Many of the workers, lime burners and woodcutters came from different regions of France. While most of the workers left after the fortress was built, eight to ten households settled down permanently. According to a notarization of property rights from 1751, the year 1692 is regarded as the actual year Büchelberg was founded.

18th century

In 1720 44 families with around 200 people lived in Büchelberg. A stone church was built between 1745 and 1747 to replace the dilapidated wooden church built in 1697. In 1751 , the so-called village contract was concluded between the Büchelberg residents and the representatives of the sovereign, Prince-Bishop of Speyer Franz Christoph . In it the land use rights of the residents were regulated against corresponding interest payments. In the southern Palatinate, which was under French sovereignty, the Speyer prince-bishop was ousted as sovereign in the course of the French Revolution. After an administrative reform in 1795, Büchelberg temporarily lost its independence and was incorporated into the Lauterburg cantonal community .

19th century

After the Napoleonic Wars , the place became part of the Kingdom of Bavaria in 1816 . Due to the difficult economic situation, many residents of Büchelberg emigrated in the 19th century. Between 1807 and 1816, eleven Büchelberg families with 53 people moved to southern Russia. Between 1820 and 1890 about 200 residents left the place, mainly for America. The Bienwald, which had not previously belonged to any municipality, was assigned to the municipality of Büchelberg in 1825.

20th century

In 1924 Büchelberg was connected to the telephone network and a year later the electricity supply and street lighting were installed.

By billeting many Siegfried Line workers , the population in Büchelberg almost tripled in 1938/39. With the beginning of the Second World War , the Büchelberg population was evacuated to Mainfranken from September 1939 to August 1941 . Two further evacuations took place in December 1944 and May 1945. Büchelberg was about 90% destroyed after the war and was the one of the Palatinate villages with the most massive war damage.

Important milestones in the reconstruction of the infrastructure in the post-war period were the construction of a central water supply system 1948–1951 (expansion 1964), the construction of the school building 1950–1952, the new town hall 1951–1952 (expansion 1964), the construction of a sewerage system 1951–1956 and 1965 –1971, as well as the expansion of the local roads from 1953.

Since June 9, 1979, the previously independent municipality of Büchelberg has been a district of the city of Wörth am Rhein . The mayor from 1979 to 1999 was Engelbert Gerstner (CDU), who was also the last mayor of the local community.

21st century

The mayor from 1999 to 2019 was Klaus Rinnert (CDU), Stefanie Gerstner (CDU) has been the mayor since 2019.
