The BLO Ateliers are a cultural project that was founded in 2004. It brings together art studios, factories, workshops, social initiatives, cultural events and urban nature. The studios are located on the site of the former Berlin-Lichtenberg depot in the Berlin district of Rummelsburg , on the outskirts of Victoria City on a 12,000 m² area owned by DB Netz AG / DB AG with the address Kaskelstrasse 55.

history

The BLO-Ateliers were in 2004 with the help of EU funding ( ERDF ) by the sponsoring organization Lockkunst eV launched their own initiative of the approximately 100 users.

From the start, the project is financially independent. The name is derived from the abbreviation Bw Blo of the former Berlin-Lichtenberg-Ost depot.

The lease with Deutsche Bahn, which runs until 2024, stipulates that the project will take over all maintenance work for buildings and areas as well as administration.

The former canteen was converted into an event room. This space is made available to social and cultural organizers. Public institutions / organizations, such as the Berlin-Lichtenberg district office or Berlin schools, regularly hold events here. So far there have been exhibitions, concerts, theater performances, film screenings, discussion events and much more.

In August 2019 a three-day performance of the Tannhäuser Opera took place on the entire site.

The cultural office of the Lichtenberg administration has been working closely with the BLO studios since they were founded. It supports individual projects, such as an exchange program with refugee artists. The Berlin-Lichtenberg Economic Office is in regular contact with innovative individual companies on the site and promotes the Lichtenberg location with them.

Ecological importance

The Berlin-Lichtenberg nature protection station advises the studio management on the conservation of the diverse flora and fauna on the site. There is evidence of a sand lizard population and bat shelters. A large part of the area consists of grasslands and provides a habitat for many insects . The area therefore contributes to the city's biodiversity . There are regular botanical tours of the site.

The members of the BLO Ateliers intend to develop the site further and secure it against resale and speculation with land. The architectural office Hummel, which is part of the planning team of ExRotaprint gGmbH in Wedding, created a maintenance and usage concept on behalf of the sponsoring association. A previously unused locomotive shed on the site is integrated there. The BLO studios are advised by the ExRotaprint-Gesellschaft on further planning.
