The Stadtwerke Bielefeld GmbH (SWB) is a municipal utility and service companies. The owner is the East Westphalian city of Bielefeld . The SWB are active in the areas of electricity, gas, drinking water and heating. Mobility, telecommunications and disposal services are offered through subsidiaries. The Bielefeld baths and an ice rink are also operated.

Company history

The history of Stadtwerke Bielefeld began in 1856 with the commissioning of the first gasworks in Bielefeld. From 2002 to 2012, 50.1% of the municipal company was held by the city of Bielefeld and 49.9% by swb AG , the former Bremen municipal utilities. For its part, swb AG owned 51 percent of the Dutch energy company Essent , a direct competitor of the energy producer E.ON , which bought into many former municipal electricity providers in East Westphalia. With Essent's entry into the Bielefeld public utility company, E.ON's interest in the Bielefeld public utility company died out. With swb's strategic stake in Bielefelder Stadtwerke, they also took on a strategic stake in Stadtwerke Gütersloh GmbH, so that Essent was indirectly involved in both companies. After the takeover of Essent by RWE in 2009, the previous minority shareholder EWE took over the Essent stake in swb AG. In May 2012, the city of Bielefeld bought back the shares in swb AG for almost 200 million euros, making Stadtwerke Bielefeld a 100% subsidiary of the city of Bielefeld again. The Stadtwerke Bielefeld group of companies with its subsidiaries employs a total of 2,410 people (as of December 31, 2016) .
