The Darmstadt - Kranichstein Railway Museum is the largest railway museum in Hessen . The former depot is on the Rhein-Main-Bahn Darmstadt– Aschaffenburg .

history

The depot was inaugurated in 1898 by the United Prussian and Hessian State Railways and after the site was rented by the Deutsche Bundesbahn to the Museumsbahn e.V. V. opened as a railway museum on May 29, 1976.

Museum project

The former depot includes a locomotive shed with a turntable , coaling systems and other treatment systems for locomotives . Attached is a repair shop where major repairs can be carried out.

Exhibition and exhibits

A large collection of vehicles can be seen in the museum , for example the operational locomotives 23 042 , 141 228-7 , DME 184 of type ELNA 6 , various Kös , a Wismar rail bus and a KLV 12-4973 motor trolley . Not ready for operation: 01 1056 , 41 024 , 44 404 , the steam locomotive 4981 "Mainz" (a Prussian G 8 ) transferred from Turkey , the gear steam locomotive 97 210 of the Erzbergbahn , the 103 101-2 , the E 16 08 , several diesel locomotives of the DB series V 36 but also other rail vehicles. For example street scooters from SEAG type: LR-40.0, LS-70.1., LS-160.1; WMD type: LR-40.5 and a Culemeyer -style R40 with intermediate bridge .

The large fleet of vehicles can be viewed there. There are also exhibits for technical understanding: The cut boiler of 50 1397 and the driver's cab of 50 1745; as well as a signaling collection with historical signals and interlocking equipment . In addition, the development of tickets from the manually created copies of the early days to today's computer printouts and associated devices is shown. The museum also has its own ticket printing facility. There is also a model of the old Darmstadt railway stations, a superstructure collection and a collection of railway uniforms.

Historical technology in use

Several times a year special trains with vehicles from the museum run between Darmstadt Ost and Bessunger Forsthaus (former route to Groß-Zimmer ). Some vehicles, e.g. B. 23 042 and the G8 4981 “Mainz” hauled special trains throughout Germany. The vehicles are used by Bahnwelt Betriebs-GmbH as the operating company. Once a year there is the steam locomotive festival including trips to the depot.

Model trains

A H0 - model railway shows the Darmstadt main station of the Main-Neckar-Bahn at the time of the track opening. There is also a track 0 system and a track 1 system .

For demonstration and educational purposes, the "MoBaTrain" (mobile railway train) has been available nationwide for railway events since 1985. The core of the train consists of a pack and a post carriage , in which a H0 - model railway layout for demonstration and training purposes is installed. The train continues to lead an LGB train and a garden train the gauge IIm with.

In the museum there is also a passenger garden railway ("Klein-Kranichsteiner Kreisbahn") with a track width of 127 mm (= 5 inches ).
