The station Cardiff Central / Caerdydd Canolog (formerly Cardiff General / Caerdydd Cyffredinol ) is the largest and most important railway station of the Welsh  capital Cardiff ( Welsh Caerdydd ) and is located on the South Wales Main Line .

Located just off Millennium Stadium in downtown Cardiff Central Square , the station is one of 20 stations in the city. Cardiff Queen Street / Caerdydd Heol y Frenhines is the closest and another major train station. The listed station building opened on June 18, 1850 and is now operated by Arriva Trains Wales . The station has eight tracks (0, 1–4, 6–8) on five platforms.

The station is the largest in Wales and also an important one on the UK rail network. The station ranks eleventh in the United Kingdom outside of London and ranks 29th nationwide in terms of passenger traffic in 2009/2010. In the 2015/2016 operating year, the station was used by 12.5 million passengers.

Railway companies and destinations

The station connects the city in the southwest of the island with other cities and regions in Great Britain. Transport for Wales / Trafnidiaeth Cymru operates the suburban rail network of Valley Lines  to Aberdare , Merthyr Tydfil , Rhymney , Ebbw Vale and Maesteg , Barry and Penarth , as well as other Welsh regional trains to Bridgend , Swansea , Llanelli , Carmarthen , Fishguard , Newport , Cheltenham , Shrewsbury , Manchester , Wrexham , Chester , Llandudno  and Holyhead . Great Western Railway operates long-distance trains to Bristol , London Paddington and regional trains to Bath , Taunton , Southampton and Portsmouth . CrossCountry operates trains from Cardiff to Gloucester , Birmingham , Nottingham .
