The Málaga María Zambrano station is the main station of the southern Spanish city of Malaga . It is owned by Adif and served by local and long-distance trains operated by RENFE . It consists of an above-ground terminal station and an underground through station. With around 4.5 million passengers a year, it is the second busiest train station in Andalusia after Seville Santa Justa .

history

The age of the railroad in Málaga began in 1862 when the Sociedad del Ferrocarril de Málaga a Córdoba station opened in the presence of Queen Isabella II . The construction was driven forward by industrialists so that the quantities of coal extracted in the Val de Córdoba could now be shipped to the port of Malaga. He was named Málaga-Término.

In 2005 and 2007, the station, located southwest of the city center , was fundamentally rebuilt in preparation for the high-speed line Córdoba – Málaga , which connects to the Spanish capital via the high-speed line Madrid – Seville . It was on the occasion of entry into operation of high-speed trains in 2007 in honor of the coming from Málaga Philosophistin and writer María Zambrano in Estación María Zambrano renamed. In 2011, the prefix Málaga was added to the station name.

investment

The station consists of two parts. On the surface of the earth there is a nine-track terminus station, whereby one track does not include a platform and is used as access to the port. Six of the above-ground tracks (1-6) are built in European standard gauge (1435 mm) and serve the high-speed trains. The Iberian broad gauge tracks 7 and 8 are used for broad gauge Media Distancia and long-distance trains.

In the underground part of the station the station has a double-track tunnel station, which exclusively serves the traffic of the Cercanías Málaga , which finds its starting point one station east in the underground terminus station Málaga Centro-Alameda in the city center . The two tracks are marked with the numbers 10 and 11. A shopping center is attached to the train station, with branches including H&M , Media Markt , McDonald’s and Burger King, as well as a multiplex cinema with three halls.

Long-distance transport

13 pairs of standard gauge AVE trains each day serve the station. Eleven of them lead to Madrid Atocha with a journey time of just under two and a half hours. Two pairs of trains connect Málaga-María Zambrano with Barcelona-Sants , using the connecting curve between the high-speed line Madrid-Seville and the high-speed line Madrid-Barcelona at the gates of Madrid. The travel time is around 5 hours and 40 minutes. In broad-gauge long-distance traffic, the station is served once a day by a pair of Alaris trains from / to Barcelona-Sants, which runs along the coast and also serves Córdoba, Valencia or Tarragona. In addition, an Estrella Picasso night train to Bilbao-Abando with service from Valladolid runs seasonally .

Média Distancia

Three lines of the Andalusian "Média Distancia RENFE" system end in Málaga-Maria Zambrano. Line 67 connects the station with Seville Santa Justa. Line 84 also runs between these two stations with seven pairs of trains a day, but its trains use the high-speed route and are marketed as Avant . Line 70 runs from Granada and Málaga to Algeciras .

Cercanías Málaga

The S-Bahn-like system of the Cercanías Málaga serves the tunnel station with both lines C-1 and C-2. Mária Zambrano is the last stop before the Centro-Alameda train station in the city center. The connection to the airport is also ensured with the C-1 line .
