The Northeim (Han) Station is a railway junction in the town of Northeim . It belongs to station category 3 and has six platform tracks. In addition to three daily ICE trains, regional traffic stops at the station .

history

On July 31, 1854, Northeim was connected to the railway network with the opening of the line from Alfeld to Göttingen (old north-south line ). On September 1, 1871, the southern Harz line to Herzberg (Harz) and then on to Nordhausen was put into operation. With the commissioning of the Solling Railway to Ottbergen on January 15, 1878, Northeim became an important railway junction . From then on, the railway largely determined the development of the city. The station building stood between the routes and was reached from the north via an access from the Moringen – Northeim road ( Bundesstrasse 241 ). In the south there was and is a rail link between the two lines.

Bombed station in April 1945

In heavy bombing raids in February and April 1945, the Northeim train station with its representative reception hall , which was built around 1885, was completely destroyed. After the Second World War , the reconstruction of the Northeim train station began.

At the end of the 1960s, today's reception building was built, in which there has been a travel center since 1993 , which replaced the classic counters.

From 1988 the first Deutsche Bahn interregional line stopped in Northeim . This offer replaced the express trains . In December 2002 the Interregio trains were replaced by Intercity trains that ran every two hours; this offer was reduced to individual trains in 2009. These have been running as ICE trains since December 2018.

In the immediate vicinity of the Northeim train station there was an accident on November 15, 1992 at around 1:30 a.m. , in which 11 people were killed and 51 injured.

In 2014, the station was modernized and made accessible for 6.4 million euros . The western platforms 1 to 3 have since been 76 cm high, the eastern platforms 11 to 13 a height of 55 cm. There is now a house platform and an island platform on each side of the station.

New superstructures for the bridges of the Leinetalbahn (left) and the Südharz route (right) over the federal road are being prepared (February 2018)

In 1997/98 the platform tunnel was extended to the west side of the station. A station square with a central bus station and parking lots has been created here. The station tunnel can now also be reached from the east.

In 2015, federal highway 241 , which runs under the north entrances, was closed for the renovation ; the railway bridges will be replaced by new buildings, which will allow higher and wider road vehicles to pass through with a new trough structure. The construction work was completed on October 17, 2019 and traffic was able to flow again from October 18, 2019.
