The St. Georgen (Schwarzw) station is the highest station of Baden Black Forest Railway .
history
The station, located at a height of 806 meters above sea level , was extensively renovated in the 1970s and equipped with underpasses . However, the station itself was built in 1873, which gave the city a connection to the Black Forest Railway. The St. Georgen train station was of great importance for industrialization in the Black Forest , especially for Sankt Georgen . Nowadays the station plays a subordinate role for industry in Sankt Georgen, but the station is still important for tourism in the Black Forest.
The train station is the only remaining of the three former train stations in the city. Until the 1970s, trains also stopped at the Sommerau and Peterzell - Königsfeld stations , but these were closed. The (disused) Sommerau train station is located a few hundred meters from the portal of the Sommerau tunnel in the direction of Singen . A turntable for the particularly powerful steam locomotives (e.g. P8 and P10, BR 39), which had to cope with the steep ascent from Offenburg to Sankt Georgen, existed here until the 1970s . Today the highest traction power feed in Germany is located at the former Sommerau train station.
All three platforms were modernized in 2016 and 2017 for 3.5 million euros and have been 55 centimeters above the top of the rails since then , which enables barrier-free entry.
Long-distance and regional transport
A regional express runs every hour in the direction of Offenburg - Karlsruhe and Singen (Hohentwiel) - Konstanz . Since the timetable change in December 2006, this line has been operated with modern double-decker coaches from Bombardier and class 146.2 electric locomotives ( Bombardier TRAXX P160 AC2). The Intercity line from Konstanz to Norddeich Mole connects the station with a pair of trains to the long-distance network of DB Fernverkehr AG . During school days in Baden-Württemberg, a single Interregio-Express also runs in the mornings from Triberg via St. Georgen, Villingen (Schwarzw) and Donaueschingen to Ulm Hbf .
