The Elchniederungsbahn was a small railway company in the former Elchniederung district in the Prussian province of East Prussia . According to the original name of the district, it was called Niederungsbahn until 1938 .
history
The area of the Elchniederung district extended in the delta of the Memel River from the western outskirts of Tilsit to the Curonian Lagoon . After the First World War, the part of the Heydekrug district on the left bank of the river was added.
The connection to the railway network was only made in 1891 by the Tilsit – Labiau – Königsberg state railway , on which the district town of Heinrichswalde was located.
Then the country received a rail route through the Niederungsbahn to the Haff. The Insterburger Kleinbahn AG took the first section on July 7, 1902 in operation; it began at the train station in Great Britain and led in a north-westerly direction via Budehlischken (Hoheneiche, no longer existent) to the former seat of the district administration in Kaukehmen (later: Kuckerneese) with 2,200 inhabitants.
It was not until February 1911 that the 37 kilometer long railway reached the lagoon near Karkeln ; In the same year, on November 20, a branch line from Budelischken to Seckenburg (17 km) was opened. This meant that the small railway network laid out in the narrow gauge of 750 mm was 53 kilometers long.
The Ostdeutsche Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft (ODEG) in Königsberg was responsible for operational management . In 1924 the Insterburger Kleinbahnen-AG became. renamed to Ostpreußische Kleinbahnen AG .
In 1939 the following vehicles were available: six steam locomotives, eleven passenger cars, four pack wagons and 107 freight cars as well as five buses.
As early as June 10, 1929, rail traffic was supplemented by bus lines: one line ran from Tilsit to Karkeln , the other from Heinrichswalde to Seckenburg .
