The Garmsar – Mashhad railway connects the city of Mashhad with the capital of Iran , Tehran . It is the busiest railway line in Iran for long-distance passenger transport .
Geographical location
The line branches off the Trans-Iranian Railway in Garmsar in an easterly direction. In combination with the Sarachs - Fariman section of the North-South Railway , a new east-west connection was created between China and Europe .
In 2014, automatic train protection with the ATP safety system was put into operation on the route . This was the first line in the Iranian railway network to be equipped with automatic train protection. More than 10,000 km are to follow. 50 diesel multiple units , 30 diesel locomotives of the series EuroRunner 24 PC (also: IranRunner ) from Siemens and the local company MAPNA as well as 10 further Paradis InterCity diesel multiple units will be equipped for the use of the train protection.
Technical parameters
The line was built in the standard gauge common in Iran and is 812 km long. The distance between Tehran and Mashhad is 925 km. Today, the entire length of the line is double- tracked. The maximum speed is 160 km / h.
history
The line has been in operation in several successive sections since 1941 and has been used continuously since April 1957. With the north-south railway from Bandar Abbas via Mashad to the Turkmen border, the Garmsar – Mashhad line became part of the railway connection from Turkey to Turkmenistan and on to China , the “ Silk Road on Rails”. With 10 million travelers per year, the route is the busiest route in Iran for passenger traffic.
future
On June 29, 2014, a contract was signed between Iran, the People's Republic of China and various companies from both countries on the electrification and expansion of the route from Tehran to Mashhad. It is to be upgraded to 200 km / h, so that the travel time between Tehran and Mashhad will be reduced to 6 hours. The engineering structures should even be designed for 250 km / h. The contract also includes the delivery of 70 electric locomotives from China to Iran. The expansion should take four years. In the future, the aim is to have an hourly service between Tehran and Mashhad. The project is estimated to cost around $ 2.6 billion. Financing is provided through loans from the People's Republic of China. The route capacity is expected to be 33 million passengers and 10 million tons of goods per year in the future .
Incidents
At least 320 people were killed when flammable chemicals exploded in a railway accident near Nishapur in 2004.
