The Haarlem - Uitgeest railway , also Noord-Hollandsche lijn , is a railway line between Haarlem and Uitgeest in the Netherlands . The length of the route is around 18 kilometers.

history

A regional train near Santpoort, 2007

The line was opened on May 1, 1867 by Hollandsche IJzeren Spoorweg-Maatschappij (HIJSM). This was preceded by the construction of the Staatslijn K between Nieuwediep (Den Helder) and Zandaam stations . Since their further construction to Amsterdam CS was delayed due to the crossing of the North Sea Canal , the HIJSM preferred the opening of this branch line. In 1876, an elaborate swing bridge had to be built due to the construction of the North Sea Canal . In 1883 the HIJSM opened a short branch line from Velsen to IJmuiden . In 1905 the swing bridge over the North Sea Canal was replaced by a new building with a larger opening width.

As a result of the heavy commuter traffic, the Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS) decided in 1926 to double-track expansion and the following year to electrify the Haarlem - Velsen - IJmuiden section. The Velsen - Uitgeest section was electrified in 1931. During this time, three more stops will also be put into operation. In addition to passenger traffic, freight traffic is also playing an increasingly important role. Important suppliers are the fish market and the Hoogovens steelworks in IJmuiden.

In 1957 the Velserspoortunnel went into operation under the North Sea Canal, the old bridge was then removed. The southern section came to the branch line to IJmuiden, the northern section to the bridge remained as a connection to the Hogovens steelworks and was electrified in 1987. Since the line to IJmuiden recorded passenger losses after the opening of the Velsertunnel, the NS decided to close the line for passenger traffic on September 24, 1983. It then remained single-track for freight traffic until 1994.

The maximum speed on the route is 130 km / h. On the section between Beverwijk and Haarlem, however, only speeds up to 100 km / h.

Train traffic

The line was part of the connection from Amsterdam to Den Helder until 1876, before the direct connection went into operation. The route was then mainly used by passenger trains between the two end points and between Haarlem and IJmuiden. After electrification, the NS offered an express service Amsterdam CS  - Haarlem  - Alkmaar . The trains from Haarlem to IJmuiden and Uitgeest were merged after the opening of the Velserspoort tunnel and winged or coupled together in Santpoort Nord . The wing train concept was retained until the 1970s. There is currently a Stoptrein from Amsterdam CS via Haarlem to Uitgeest and a Sneltrein from The Hague via Alkmaar to Hoorn .
