The Le Palais – Eygurande-Merlines railway is a single-track , non-electrified railway line in central France . It is a branch line of the Orléans – Montauban connection and leads from it near Limoges in a south-easterly direction into the Vienne valley . From Ussel , the route is no longer operated by passengers.

history

Entry Intercity 4492 with BB67432 in Eygurande-Merlines, June 2014.

The oldest section of this route is between Meymac and Eygurande - Merlines , which is part of the Tulle - Clermont-Ferrand highway . As early as June 19, 1868, this destination was declared “important for the public interest” by decree. The construction and operation of the line was passed by law of August 3, 1872 to a concession company made up of private individuals, who raised a capital of 23 million francs and merged to form the Compagnie de Clermont à Tulle (CCT). The CCT bought the route designated by this from the state and began construction. Due to financial difficulties, the CCT was unable to complete the work, and it was the State Railway Administration that completed the route from 1877 onwards, only to open it for use on June 6, 1881. The Compagnie du chemin de fer de Paris à Orléans (PO) was a new prospect for the route, thus completing its route network in this area. The purchase was completed in the summer of 1883 and approved by law.

At this point the first (oldest) section was already open, namely on September 19, 1880. It was followed by Le Palais to Eymoutiers on December 31, 1880, Ussel – Eygurande-Merlines on June 6, 1881 and Eymoutiers – Meymac on October 8 1883.

On July 6, 2014, the section between Eygurande-Merlines and Laqueuille was closed . Because the trains from Clermont-Ferrand were tied through to Ussel, the 18 km long section from Ussel was also affected. According to the infrastructure operator Réseau ferré de France (RFF), no safety guarantee can be given for this section. 21,000 sleepers would have to be replaced. The 7 million euros required for this would have to be shared between the state, the Limousin region and Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes , but the Auvergne would not be interested in it. Since then there has been replacement rail traffic and the line is no longer maintained. Nature reclaims its territory.
