The viaduct of the A89 over the Chavanon near Merlines

Merlines ( Merlinas in Occitan ) is a French municipality with 718 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Correze in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine .

geography

The municipality is located in the Massif Central on the Plateau de Millevaches and therefore also in the Millevaches en Limousin Regional Nature Park on the right bank of the Chavanon directly on the border with the Puy-de-Dôme department .

Tulle , the prefecture of the department, is about 80 kilometers southwest, Ussel about 18 kilometers southwest and Clermont-Ferrand about 60 kilometers northeast.

Neighboring municipalities of Merlines are Eygurande in the north, Monestier-Merlines in the northeast, Messeix in the east, Savennes in the southeast, Saint-Étienne-aux-Clos in the south and Aix in the west.

The 14 hectare lake Étang de l'Abeille, artificially created in 1970, is located north of the town center.

The place is about ten kilometers northeast of exit 24 of the A89 autoroute . The station Merlines, Gare d'Eygurande-Merlines is shut down since, 2014.

history

Before the French Revolution , the community belonged to the lords of Lagarde (Ussel) and the abbots of Port-Dieu .

From 1880 to 1952 Merlines was an important railway center in France. After the construction of the dam of Bort-les-Orgues , Barrage de Bort-les-Orgues , the establishment quickly lost importance.
