Margerides - Église Saint-Martin

Margerides ( Occitan Marjarida ) is a place and a French commune with 305 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Corrèze department in the east of the Limousin region .

The municipality of Margerides is located in the Massif Central at an altitude of approx. 680 meters above sea level. d. M. left side of the Diège , whose dam ( Barrage des Chaumettes ) is about three kilometers to the southwest. Tulle , the prefecture of the département, is located approximately 70 kilometers southwest, Ussel approximately 15 kilometers northwest and Bort-les-Orgues approximately 12 kilometers southeast. Neighboring communities of Margerides are Saint-Bonnet-près-Bort in the north, Sarroux-Saint Julien with Saint-Julien-près-Bort in the east, Roche-le-Peyroux in the south and Saint-Victour in the west.

In the 19th century the community consistently had between 700 and 800 inhabitants. The mechanization of agriculture and the resulting loss of jobs led to a significant population decline in the 20th century.

  • The Saint-Martin church , a single-nave Romanesque sacred building from the 12th century with Auvergnatian style influences, has a multi-pass arch over the archivolt portal - protected by a vestibule . The nave is barrel vaulted; the chancel arch rests on pillars with capitals showing fantastic animals. The church building has been classified as a monument historique since August 1, 1975 .
  • In 1905 the remains of a pagan temple complex from Gallo-Roman times were discovered and archaeologically explored. The ruins of the complex have been recognized as a monument historique since December 19, 1984 .
