climate

Due to its large area and altitudes between 600 and almost 1000 meters on Mont Bessou, there are numerous microclimatic zones within the municipality. In the area of Mont Bessou, for example, a harsh mountain climate with oceanic humid influences develops, while in more southerly areas z. B. in the center of Meymac is much milder. In winter, frosts are numerous and snowfalls are frequent. The air is pure and clear, which is underlined by the presence of lichens such as the Lobaria scrobiculata .

geology

About one kilometer south of Meymac is the first bismuth mine in France, but it is no longer in operation today. The mineral Meymacite is after its first location in Meymac at the pond of Merlançon been named. The pond is now a national nature reserve.

history

As with many communities in the Corrèze, Meymac goes back to a Gallo-Roman court foundation. This time it was the Roman Maximiacus who built a farm here on a Roman road through the Auvergne. The current name Meymac is made up of the Roman name Maximiacus and the Celtic suffix acum (the homestead). From 546 AD, during the Merovingian period , the hermit Mammacus built a simple wooden church on this site, where the first Christians of the region then settled.

A good 500 years later, in 1085, a certain Archambaud III. , Vicomte de Comborn, founded a monastery here, which was elevated to an abbey in 1147 . In 1265 Meymac was raised to town by Eble VII. De Ventadour and received fortification walls.

In 1846 the parishes of Saint-Germain-le-Lièvre and Meymac merged .

Today Meymac is the gateway to the Plateau de Millevaches and therefore an important tourist place in the Haute-Corrèze .
