The community is located in the Massif Central about ten kilometers east of the Barrage de la Valette and is surrounded by extensive forests. Tulle , the prefecture of the department is around 30 kilometers to the west and Égletons around 20 kilometers to the north.

The place was originally called Ecclesiam Sancti Medardi , in 1315 Sancti Medardi and later in today's form Saint-Merd-de-Lapleau . Saint Merd is an abbreviation for Saint Medardus . Lapleau is a tribute to the municipality of Lapleau .
