The Weser is a pilot station ship stationed in the mouth of the Weser . The ship is operated by Lotsbetriebsverein e. V., Bremerhaven branch, managed . It is used in the mouth of the Weser by the Pilot Brotherhood Weser II / Jade in Bremerhaven .

history

The Weser , designed as a SWATH ship (i.e. with two underwater floats), was built under construction number 6485 by the Abeking & Rasmussen ship and yacht yard on the site of the former Siegholt shipyard in Bremerhaven's fishing port . The keel was laid on June 18, 2008, it was launched on October 5, 2009, and it was completed on June 21, 2010. The construction of the ship cost around 50 million euros.

The ship was christened on August 18, 2010 at the Seebäderkaje in Bremerhaven . Godmother was Elke Ferlemann, the wife of the parliamentary state secretary in the Federal Ministry of Transport, Enak Ferlemann .

The ship replaces the two monohull ships Gotthilf Hagen and Kapitän König . The Hanse is available as a replacement ship .

Technology and equipment

The Weser is powered by diesel-electric technology . The total of four generators are driven by eight-cylinder diesel engines from MTU Friedrichshafen, each with an output of 760  kW . The two traction motors with an output of 1260 kW each, which act on a fixed propeller via a gearbox , are from AEM Anhaltisches Elektromotorenwerk Dessau . In addition to the four diesel generators, the ship also has an auxiliary diesel. The motors are housed in the floating bodies and thus separated from the living area.

The ship has a bow thruster with an output of 350 kW, which is built into the port float.

There is space on board the ship for up to 34 crew members (in single- bed chambers) and 50 pilots (in two-bed chambers ). The ship is designed for a deployment period of two to three weeks. Usually there is a change of staff in Bremerhaven every two weeks. During this time the Hanseatic League functions as a station ship in the mouth of the Weser.

In addition to the regular crew and the pilots, the three-man crews of the transfer boats, who work in shifts, also live on board.

concept

Transfer boat Wangeroog

In addition to the Weser , which functions as a station ship, the concept also includes one or two transfer boats , so-called tenders (named after the East Frisian islands of Borkum and Wangeroog ). The tenders are also designed as SWATH ships and were built by Abeking & Rasmussen. They are 25.65 m long, 13.0 m wide and have a 2.7 m draft.

The Borkum (call sign: DBBV, home port: Emden) was built in 2003/2004 under construction number 6467. The keel was laid on March 21, 2003, the launch on March 6, 2004. The ship was completed on March 3, 2004.

The Wangeroog (call sign: DBIW, home port: Bremerhaven) was built in 2003/2004 under construction number 6468. The keel was laid on June 20, 2003, the launch on September 1, 2004. The ship was completed on October 20, 2004.

For ships that cannot be served with the SWATH tenders, two smaller, 8.5 m long transfer boats are available. These are designed as conventional monohulls and, if necessary, are lowered into the water using davits , one on the port and one on the starboard side.

Criticism of the Pilot Brotherhood

After the positive experience with SWATH technology in the Elbe estuary , the federal government also decided to purchase corresponding systems for the Weser and Ems estuaries . Responsible for the areas outside the Weser and Jade competent Lotsbrüderschaft Weser II / Jade spoke about the other morphological but for a monohull to replace the previously used pilot station ships from requirements in the mouth area of the Weser and Jade compared to the same, as in the past in connection with Relocation by helicopter. In the area of the Weser and Jade pilot stations, for example, there were no sandbanks behind which the station ship , which could be used up to a wave height of around 3.5 m , could retreat in rough seas . From the so-called inland positions at Hoheweg-Reede, to which the station ship can withdraw, the transfer of pilots for large ships without having to resort to helicopters is only possible to a limited extent.
