SWATH @ A & R is the name of a hull concept from the Abeking & Rasmussen shipyard in Lemwerder, Lower Saxony . SWATH ships have a double hull with completely submerged floats, but the cross-section at the waterline is very small. This means that they are quieter in the water than conventional monohulls when the waves are rough. The shipyard has been using this construction as a platform since 1999.

According to this concept, the shipyard builds pilot station ships ( 60m SWATH @ A & R ) and pilot transfer boats ( 25m SWATH @ A & R ). But it also serves as a platform for other ships, such as patrol boats and yachts .

60 m SWATH @ A & R

The 60m SWATH @ A&R ships have so far been built as pilot station ships. Between 2008 and 2010, the shipyard built two units - the Elbe and the Weser - for the Federal Institute for Hydraulic Engineering , which makes the ships available to the pilotage association. The investment volume was around 100 million euros.

The two ships are in use in the Elbe and Weser estuaries. Another ship of the type was built for the pilot transfer system of the Belgian seaports.

Technical data and equipment

The ships are around 60 meters long and 24.6 meters wide. The side height of the vehicles is 11.33 meters, the draft 6.5 meters. The ships are measured with 2462 GT and 738 NRZ and have a deadweight of around 300 tons.

The ships are powered by diesel-electric technology . For the power supply of the traction motors four eight-cylinder diesel engines provide by MTU Friedrichshafen , each with 760  kW power . The two traction motors are from AEM Anhaltisches Elektromotorenwerk Dessau (type: AEM AH 450 L6). They each have an output of 1260 kW and each act on a fixed propeller via a gearbox. The ships reach a maximum speed of 13  knots . An auxiliary diesel provides the continued power supply for the consumers on board. The motors are housed in the floating bodies and thus separated from the living area.

The ships also have a bow thruster with an output of 350 kW. The bow thruster is built into the port float.

There is space on board for a total of 34 crew members in individual chambers. Another 25 chambers are available for the pilots . These are intended for double occupancy. The ships are operated with a crew of 20 people.

25 m SWATH @ A & R

The 25m SWATH @ A & R ships are primarily built as pilot tenders for the 60m SWATH @ A & R pilot station ships. The Lotsbetriebsverein has a total of five units that are used in the Elbe and Weser estuaries. In addition, two boats were built for the pilot transfer system in the Netherlands, three boats for the pilot transfer system in Belgium and two boats for the pilot transfer system in the US port of Houston.

A unit of the type was built as a hydrographic survey ship for the Estonian shipping administration. Five patrol boats of the series were built for the Latvian Navy. The boats there form the Skrunda class . Three units of the class, primarily intended for surveillance and control of the territorial waters and the exclusive economic zone , were built at Abeking & Rasmussen, the other two at Riga Shipyards. In addition, there is a ship based on the concept, the Natalia Bekker , which is used as a wind farm tender, as well as an Omani yacht.

Technical data and equipment

The ships are 25.65 meters long and 13 meters wide. The draft is 2.7 meters. The two pilot tenders Döse and Duhnen built in 1999 are measured with 225 GT and 67 NRZ, the ships built after that have a measurement of 228 GT and 68 NRZ. The load capacity is 14 tons.

The Natalia Bekker is 26.18 meters long and 13 meters wide. It is measured with 222 GT and 66 NRZ and has a load capacity of 18 tons.

The technical data of the ships differ slightly in some cases. The drive is diesel-electric . In contrast to the pilot station ships , the diesel engines in the basic design of the 25m SWATH @ A&R ships are not located in the floating bodies.

The two pilot tenders built in 1999 are equipped with two generators for power generation and two electric motors from STN ATLAS Marine Electronics as traction motors (type: MODR 355 L 466). The motors have a maximum output of 710 kW each and each act on a fixed propeller via a gearbox.

The units built later are equipped with two generators from MTU Friedrichshafen (type: MTU 12V2000) for generating electricity. A&R used traction motors from different manufacturers. The pilot transfer boats are equipped with electric motors from AEM Anhaltisches Elektromotorenwerk Dessau (type: SE 400 M4), each with an output of 748 kW. The wind farm tender Natalia Bekker has electric motors from Franz Wölfer Elektromaschinenfabrik Osnabrück (type: WÖLFER MODRF 355-4bb) with 710 kW each as traction motors. The traction motors also act on a fixed propeller via gears. Another generator provides the further power supply for the consumers on board.

The ships reach a maximum speed of 18 knots. Depending on the client's requirements, some of the ships are equipped with bow thrusters.

The patrol boats for the Latvian Navy are equipped with somewhat more powerful engines from MAN (type: MAN D2842); they each have an output of 809 kW and each act on a variable pitch propeller via a gearbox . The ships can reach speeds of over 20 knots. On the ships, the diesel engines are housed in the floating bodies. This leaves space in the superstructure for up to eight crew members. The crew members can be accommodated in two-man chambers. The ships have a range of 1000  nautical miles and can stay at sea for up to a week.

The two pilot tenders built for Houston Pilots are each equipped with two MAN D2862 LE 44 diesel engines that drive two fixed propellers via gearboxes. The ships reach around 19 kn. They have a significantly larger wheelhouse and ten chambers for the pilots.

More SWATH @ A & R

On the basis of SWATH @ A & R technology, in addition to the 60m SWATH @ A & R and 25m SWATH @ A & R ships, different ships were also built.

The Hanseatic League was built between 1998 and 2000 as the Elbe . The pilot station ship is 49.81 meters long and 22.55 meters wide, slightly smaller than the 60 m SWATH @ A&R pilot station ships. It is measured with 2136 GT and 640 NRZ and has a load capacity of 185 tons. The Hanseatic League served to test the SWATH system for the transfer of pilots. Since the new Elbe was put into service , it has been a replacement ship for the pilot station ships in the Elbe and Weser estuaries.

The drive is diesel-electric. There are four diesel generators on board to supply power to the traction motors, and an auxiliary diesel is used to generate additional electricity. The drive motors are two electric motors from STN ATLAS Marine Electronics (type: INWA-450 MO-04 A), each with an output of 1000 kW. The two motors each act on a fixed propeller via gears. The ship thus reaches a maximum speed of 15 knots.

In 2008, with the Silver Cloud , another ship based on SWATH technology was built as an expedition yacht. The Silver Cloud is 40.5 meters long and 17.8 meters wide. Their draft is about 4 meters. The maximum speed of the ship is 14 knots, the cruising speed is given as 12.5 knots. At a speed of 10 knots, the ship has a range of 3500 nautical miles. The ship is equipped with a master suite and four guest cabins for up to 12 passengers as well as five cabins for nine crew members.
