Balatun ( Serbian-Cyrillic : Балатун) is a village in the Opština (municipality) Bijeljina in the northeast of Bosnia and Herzegovina on the border with neighboring Serbia to the east .

geography

Balatun lies in the flat plain of the Semberija , 15.2 km northeast of the municipality capital Bijeljina. The village is located around 140 km northeast of the Bosnian - Herzegovinian capital Sarajevo .

The municipality of Bijeljina is located in the Republika Srpska , one of two entities in the country, with a predominantly Serbian population.

Balatun is located at the mouth of the Drina River into the Save . The river Drina represents the border to the eastern neighboring country Serbia. Smaller streams also flow through Balatun, one of them is called Prugnajača . Balatun is located near the Rača border crossing between Serbia and Bosnia-Herzegovina.

The neighboring villages of Balatun are: Velino Selo , Trnjaci and Međaši in the Opština Bijeljina in Bosnia and the eastern neighboring village of Crna Bara , in the Opština Bogatić in Serbia, which can be reached via the Drina.

The village consists of the village parts ( hamlets ): Balatun, Centar, Cesta, Donji Balvani, Gornji Balvani, Meterizi, Panjik, Trnjage and Salaš.

The climate in the village is temperate-continental. All around Balatun there are wide fields that are used for agriculture and livestock. Corn, various types of wheat, fruits and vegetables are grown.

Balatun had 1,351 inhabitants at the 2013 census in Bosnia and Herzegovina. This census was the first after the census in 1991 in what was then Yugoslavia , before the outbreak of the Bosnian War .

history

Balatun is an old village. The old name of the village is said to have been Balatino . A parish of Balatino is mentioned from a document from 1623 , which belonged to the Roman Catholic Franciscan monastery of Olovo .

During the Bosnian War of March 24-25 , 1992, 22 Bosniak civilians, including 7 children, were dragged from their homes in the village of Bukreš in Balatun, murdered near Balatun and thrown into the Drina River. The village was hit by major floods in 2010 and 2014 ( Balkan Depression Yvette ) which caused major property damage in the village.

Infrastructure

Balatun is the seat of a local community (Mesna zajednica) and has a culture house (Dom Kulture). The Petar Kočić elementary school, which stands next to the Serbian Orthodox Church, is also in the village. Balatun has the folklore group KUD Balatun .

In the village there are a few shops and the small grocery store Natura Food . There are two monuments near the church. One is dedicated to the Yugoslav partisans who fell in World War II and the other is dedicated to the victims of the Bosnian War from the village.

The population is committed to the Serbian Orthodox Church . In Balatun there is the Serbian Orthodox Church of the Three Hierarchs , built between 2000 and 2008 , the parish church of the Balatun-Velino Selo parish in the Bijeljina Deanery of the Zvornik - Tuzla eparchy of the Serbian Orthodox Church.

The slava of the village is Ascension Day (Spasovdan). The parish of Balatun-Velino Selo consists of two villages: Balatun and Velino Selo. Balatun has a Serbian Orthodox village cemetery.

Sports

The village of Balatun has the football club FK Drina Balatun , the club has its own football field near the church and primary school in the village center. The club was founded in 1931 and is one of the oldest football clubs in the entire Semberija Plain.
