history

The Bank for Church and Diakonie eG - KD-Bank - looks back on a long tradition. The Landeskirchliche Kredit-Genossenschaft Sachsen LKG (today a branch of the Bank for Church and Diakonia - KD-Bank in Dresden) was founded in 1925 as the first Protestant bank in Germany. In 1927 Evangelical loan cooperatives were founded in Magdeburg and Münster . The Rhineland followed suit in 1953. Helping people to help themselves, encouraging members and allowing members to participate in economic success were the ideas that motivated the founders. In 1927 the self-help organization “Loan Cooperative of the Westphalian Inner Mission eGmbH” was founded by Martin Niemöller . Victor Rohdich, who had been the administrative director of the Inner Mission since autumn 1926, was also heavily involved in the founding. At the same time a church bank was set up in the province of Saxony under the name "Provincial Church Savings and Loans Cooperative for the Province in Saxony eGmbH". Before the Second World War, people in the Rhineland were already thinking about a church loan fund. But it was not until June 1953 that Otto Vetter founded the “Loan Cooperative of the Evangelical Church Congregation and Associations and the Church Works in the Rhineland eGmbH”. With the reunification, business in the new federal states was started from Berlin and Magdeburg and a merger with Prosparda, which was based in Magdeburg, was carried out in two steps. In 2003 the DGM and the BKD merged to form "KD-Bank eG - the bank for church and diakonia -". An agreement of this merger was a new head office in the geographical center of Duisburg and Münster. The choice fell on Dortmund. Since February 28, 2006 the building in Dortmund has become the main office. On June 9, 2010, the general assembly of the KD-Bank approved a merger with the Landeskirchliche Kredit-Genossenschaft Sachsen eG (LKG) based in Dresden. The merger took effect retrospectively on January 1, 2010. At the same time, the general assembly decided to rename it to “Bank for Church and Diakonie eG - KD-BANK”. This slight modification of the name is intended to bring more public attention to what this bank stands for.
