Theming banshee

Banshee ("Banshee") in the American amusement park Kings Island ( Mason , Ohio ) is a steel roller coaster model Inverted Coaster from the manufacturer Bolliger & Mabillard , which was officially opened on April 18, 2014. The 1257 m long and 24 million dollar route reaches a height of 51 m, from which the trains are accelerated to a top speed of 109 km / h, and has, in addition to five other inversions, a Pretzel knot that is unique on roller coasters .

history

The demolished runway Son of Beast

Banshee was built on the former site of the Son of Beast wooden roller coaster and a go-kart track . After several incidents in 2006 and 2009, it was announced in July 2012 that Son of Beast would be demolished for future expansion of the park. However, it was not announced at this time what would replace the railway. After the demolition work was completed, construction began on Banshee on April 22, 2013. On April 24, 2013, the name Banshee was registered as a brand name for Kings Island.

Kings Island began promoting the new attraction from the first day of the 2013 season. A construction fence was therefore erected, which was supposed to attract the attention of visitors with a mysterious label, but did not yet provide any precise information. In the course of the summer, new information boards were repeatedly erected near the construction site. On June 10th, the park began its social media campaign by uploading a photo of the construction site labeled “Field of Dreams”. The advertising campaign continued with the installation of five scarecrows and several Twitter posts with information about the new attraction. As a further advertising measure, sound recordings of screaming people were played near the construction site in early July. Two weeks later, owls were placed in nearby trees as decorations. On July 31, 2013, it was officially announced that plans for the new attraction would be presented on August 8 at 10 p.m. A limited number of tickets including a construction site tour and a reserved seat on a pew during the presentation were sold to the public. The proceeds were donated to breast cancer research. On August 1st, some construction plans were released without the park's permission.

On August 8, 2013 Kings Island finally announced Banshee, the longest inverted coaster in the world, at said press conference . With a construction cost of US $ 24 million , this is the largest investment in the entire history of the park. Banshee will be Bolliger & Mabillard's second roller coaster after Diamondback and the 14th overall roller coaster in Kings Island.

The first rail sections arrived in the park in mid-August, so that the first section of the track was built on August 27th. On April 18, 2014, Banshee was officially opened.

journey

After the train has left the station, it makes a left turn that ends in the lift hill. Arrived at a height of 51 meters, the train arrives at the 46-meter-high descent, which is laid out in a right-hand bend. This is followed by a dive loop and a loop around the lift hill. The train then goes through a zero-g-roll , a pretzel knot and a second loop. Before the train pulls into the final brake, the car comes into a heartline roll and a left-leaning helix.

Due to the hillside location on which the train is built, unlike most roller coasters, Banshee does not reach the top speed of 109 km / h after the first descent, but only halfway through the route.

technology

rail

The steel track is 1257 meters long and the lift hill is approx. 51 meters high. The rails are purple and the supports are blue. The rails were purchased from Clermont Steel Fabricators , producer of Bolliger & Mabillard, in Batavia ( Ohio produced).

Trains

Banshee has three identical steel and fiberglass trains with eight cars each. Each car consists of a row with four seats, so that a train has a capacity of 32 people and around 1650 people per hour can be transported in the system. Each individual seat has a new type of flexible shoulder bar as a restraint system , which is also used on wing coasters from the same manufacturer.

Theming

The theme of the train is based on a female mythological spirit of the same name . In addition to the actual runway, a square with a corresponding theming was also built to round off the overall picture of the runway.

Records

Banshee was the world's longest inverted coaster with a length of 1,257 meters when it opened . In addition, the railway has two new elements . The first loop through which the lift hill leads inside is unique for an inverted coaster. There are only two other tracks, also manufactured by Bolliger & Mabillard , that have this special looping position: The Sitting Coaster Kumba in Busch Gardens and the Stand-Up Coaster Riddler’s Revenge in Six Flags Magic Mountain .

The Pretzel Knot element is unique for a roller coaster . This consists of a batwing where the entrance and exit intersect. Although the Moonsault Scramble was a pretzel knot runway from 1983 , it was closed in 2000 due to the g-forces generated when passing through it.
