Barbusano ( Apollonias barbujana ) is a species of plant within the laurel family (Lauraceae).
It is endemic to central Macaronesia .

Vegetative characteristics
Barbusano is a tree that can grow up to 25 meters tall. The wood is hard and brown-red and is also known as Canarian ebony. The leaves are ovate-lanceolate, without glands , dark green and shiny. The leaf margin is smooth, slightly rolled and wavy. On the surface of the leaf there are sometimes bulges caused by galls .
Generative characteristics
The flowering period extends from June to September. The paniculate inflorescences are at the ends of the branches. The fragrant, hermaphrodite flowers are yellowish and sixfold. The fruits are about 1 to 2 centimeters in size, olive-shaped, fleshy and blue-black when ripe.
Occurrence
Barbusano occurs on Madeira and the Canary Islands La Palma , La Gomera , El Hierro , Tenerife , Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura . It grows in the laurel forests , where it occurs mainly in drier locations and in the lower area. It is rarer than other laurel plants.

The wood , also known as Canarian ebony, is in great demand because of its resilience and hardness and is used, among other things, for furniture production, the manufacture of coffered ceilings and doors.
