The Barrowland Ballroom is a dance club and performance venue in Glasgow , Scotland .

history

The original building opened in 1934 and has grown into Scotland's premier dance club from the start. Nearby is the Barrowland Market, after which both the area and the building are named. The front of the house is decorated with a distinctive neon sign .

Large parts of the building were destroyed in a fire in 1958. After the building was renovated, the ballroom was able to reopen on Christmas Eve 1960.

With the rise of rock and pop music , the building became increasingly important as a venue. With limited capacity (around 1,900 people), it is best known for its excellent acoustics and was voted the best venue in the UK in a survey of British bands .

A variety of well-known artists have performed at the Barrowland Ballroom, including Simple Minds , Foo Fighters , Queens of the Stone Age , Mark Lanegan , REM , Oasis , The Cure , Green Day , U2 , Rage Against the Machine , Blur , Bob Dylan , Björk , David Bowie , Counting Crows , Iggy Pop , Metallica , Blondie , Ramones , Stiff Little Fingers , INXS , Justin Timberlake , Garbage , Sheryl Crow , Britney Spears , Marilyn Manson , Nine Inch Nails , Runrig , Del Amitri , Elvis Costello or Alice Cooper .
