The Barthelmarkt in Oberstimm , a district of Manching in the Pfaffenhofen an der Ilm district , is the fourth largest folk festival in Upper Bavaria (as of 2019) and one of the oldest in Germany based on visitor numbers . The market is named after Saint Bartholomew , the namesake of the Oberstimmer Church and patron saint of fishermen and shepherds. It lasts four days and traditionally takes place on the weekend of the last Sunday in August. A total of over 250,000 visitors are recorded annually.

history

Saint Bartholomew Church is named after the church

A written mention in the year 1354 is secured , for example, in individual archives there is talk of an "traditional Markth zu Stymm". Around 200 years later, a market is mentioned in a document in 1541 , which takes place annually around Saint Bartholomew's Day. The Barthelmarkt was named after the local church saint Bartholomäus .

A forerunner of the market is said to have existed as a horse and cattle market for the Roman occupiers since the first century AD . The Roman military camp Oberstimm was built around 40 AD.

During the First World War and the last three years of the Second World War, the market did not take place. Since 1946, the Barthelmarkt has taken place every year as usual. The Barthelmarkt has been running for four days (Friday to Monday) since 1962.

A special feature is the Barthelmarkt hymn, which was composed in 1979 by Helmut Högl in honor of the landlady Anna Lanzl. This is part of the musicians' standard repertoire and is sung again and again by bands and visitors. It is also worth mentioning the tradition of storming tents on Monday, when the beer tents are opened early in the morning around 5:00 a.m. and the benches are completely occupied only seconds later.

today

The nationally known festival takes place every year around the weekend of the last Sunday in August on the Barthelmarkt area and lasts from Friday to Monday. The Barthelmarkt will be officially opened on Friday lunchtime when the mayor of the market town of Manching taps the first barrel. The tapping does not take place in the tent, as usual, but always in front of the church. The first barrel is served as free beer.

There is a horse race on Saturdays. The origin of the Barthelmarkt is the Rossmarkt (horse and foal market) on Monday morning ("Barthelmarktmontag"), which still exists today and is the highlight of the market. On this day, the beer tents are filled to bursting within a few minutes after opening (at 5:30 in the morning) and the visitors are greeted with a friendly “Good morning, Oberstimm!”.

Because of its close proximity to Ingolstadt (Oberstimm is immediately south of the city limits), many “Schanzers” visit the folk festival by bike. There is a parking lot right next to it, which offers enough space for visitors. The INVG and some other local bus companies offer special connections during the Barthelmarktzeit.

In 2010, the Barthelmarkt made negative headlines when the singer of a band initiated " Sieg Heil " calls in the beer tent , which were also answered by some visitors. This resulted in criminal proceedings against the musician and the organizer concerned announced that they no longer wanted to employ this band in the future.

Marquee tents

There are five beer tents on the Barthelmarkt, which are now mainly supplied and operated by breweries and innkeepers from the region. In the past, instead of the Spaten beer from Munich, the brand "Wolnzacher Hopfenperle" from Wolnzach was one of them. This was bought by Spaten and with it the tent business. The wheat beer garden was only added in the last few decades:

In 2011, the price for a liter of beer in all festival tents was € 7.40, which is an increase of 50 cents compared to the previous year. The beer price was thus in the Bavarian mediocrity, since z. B. also at the Straubing Gäubodenvolksfest or the Rosenheim autumn festival the Maß costs just as much. In 2017, the uniform beer price in the tents was 8.80 euros for a liter of beer, Radler or Spezi. A liter of mineral water or apple spritzer cost 6.80 euros.

More traditional music is played during the day; in the evening, however, the bands usually give way to the younger generation's party bands.
