Hendrikus Sebastiaan Hermanus "Bas" Nijhuis (born January 12, 1977 ) is a Dutch football referee . Since 2007 he has been leading international matches for FIFA .

Life

Inspired by his father, who was also a referee, Nijhuis began to whistle his first games at the age of 15, but initially only for youth games. On March 12, 2005 he had his debut in the top Dutch league, the Eredivisie, on the 25th matchday in the game between SC Heerenveen against RKC Waalwijk (1: 2) . Internationally, he initially only gained experience as the fourth official in the group stages of the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Cup ; in 2007 he was appointed FIFA referee. In 2009 Nijhuis was one of six referees at the U-19 European Football Championship . In his career so far, he has led 170 professional games and distributed 555 yellow , 32 yellow-red and 18 red cards .

On December 21, 2011, Bas Nijhuis came under public criticism when he received the goalkeeper of the visiting team, Esteban Alvarado Brown , with the red card in the round of 16 of the Dutch Cup competition 2011/12 between Ajax Amsterdam and AZ Alkmaar in the Amsterdam Arena after he kicked a spectator from the ranks of Ajax supporters who had run into the square. The speedster had jumped at the goalkeeper with a stretched leg and hit him in the leg, fell and was hit in the legs by two kicks by the goalkeeper before stewards could bring him under their control. After the team and staff of AZ Alkmaar had left the interior of the stadium, because they could no longer see the safety of the players, Nijhuis broke off the game. The following day, the KNVB decided that the red card against Esteban had been correct, but had no consequences because Esteban had acted as the attacked under the stress of the circumstances.

Nijhuis comes from Enschede and is a full-time butcher .
