The Bayard class was a class of French armored ships II. Rank. The type ship put into service in 1882 was named after Pierre Terrail de Bayard . Both ships of the class served, among other things, in the conflicts with China at the end of the 19th century.

history

The Bayard- class ships were laid down in the naval shipyards in Brest and Lorient in 1876 . While the type of ship Bayard in March 1880 was launched , his came sistership Turenne in October 1879 water. Both units entered service in the Navy in 1882. The Bayard was used as a Hulk from 1899 , and the Turenne was removed from the list of warships in 1901.

technology

The armored ships had a wooden hull. The superstructure and the ramming bow were made of steel. The ships were 81.0 m long, 17.45 m wide and lay up to 7.67 m deep in the water. The maximum displacement was 5,915 t for the Bayard and 6,260 t for the Turenne .

The ships were driven by two upright 2-cylinder twin composite steam engines , each of which acted on a propeller . With an indexed output of 4,400 PSi, they enabled a maximum speed of 14.5  kn . The steam supply was provided by eight coal-fired cylinder boilers with a common chimney . The fuel supply carried on board amounted to 450 tons of coal . To support the machine, the ships were also rigged as three-masted full ships .

The armament consisted of four guns of the caliber 24.0 cm L / 19 (model 1870), the four individual barbettes were housed. The gun placement was similar to that of the Amiral Duperré . Two guns were in swallow nests on either side of the ship, the other two were on the midship line behind the funnel and on the stern between the main and mizzen mast . The heavy artillery was supplemented by several small guns of different calibers: two 19.0 cm (model 1870), six 14.0 cm (model 1881) as well as four 3 pounder guns caliber 4.7 cm and twelve 1 pounder revolver cannons Hotchkiss type 3.7 cm . The Turenne also had two torpedo tubes 35.6 cm in diameter arranged over water .

Both ships were equipped with wrought - iron belt armor that spanned the entire ship . This ranged from approx. 130 cm above the waterline to 160 cm below. Amidships it was 254 mm thick, but decreased to 152 mm towards the ends of the ship. The barbeds of the guns were provided with 203 mm thick armor, while the ammunition lifts remained unarmored.

The crew of the ironclad ships had a nominal strength of 451 men.
