action

Robert and Mamie Eunson come from Scotland and were invited by Mamie's uncle in 1856 and therefore emigrated to America. They arrive in the tiny logging village of Eureka and now they learn that the uncle recently burned to death in his hut. The friendly locals are helping the Eunsons to rebuild the house. Mamie is heavily pregnant when they reach Eureka and soon, as soon as the hut has been rebuilt, her son Robbie is born. Robert initially works as a woodcutter, later he starts a successful boat building business. Mamie has five more children: Jimmy, Kirk, Annabelle, Elizabeth, and Jane. Everything is going well when little Kirk suddenly falls ill with diphtheria . Mamie and Kirk are quarantined, while Robert has to look after himself and the other children on his own. The boy fortunately recovers, but the kiss Kirk gave his father before he left is fatal for Robert and he dies.

Mamie now works as a seamstress and Robbie, as the eldest, becomes the head of the family. The situation stabilized only for a short time, then Mamie fell ill with typhus . Knowing that she will not survive, she hires her eldest son Robbie to find a good home for his siblings. After his mother's death, Robbie takes his brothers and sisters up with friendly people in town on Christmas Day. Resigned, he brings Baby Jane to a house as the last of the siblings. After Robbie knocks on the door, he asks: "Please, ma'am, I was wondering if you want my sister."
