action
The serial killer Béla Kiss killed more than 20 young women at the beginning of the First World War . Allegedly killed in the war, he was spotted again and again decades later. Its whereabouts remained unclear.
Almost 100 years later, five young people are hiding in a remote hotel in the forest after a successful bank robbery. Gradually there is a quarrel within the group and finally the first murder. Béla Kiss, long believed dead, still seems to be alive.
production
Bela Kiss: Prologue started in May 2009 as a diploma project by four students from the Lazi Academy - The European School of Film and Design in Esslingen. While researching serial killers for a future film project, the team of Mirror Maze, Lucien Förstner, Sylvia Günthner, Steven Weber and Eric Kazak became aware of the story of Béla Kiss.
The project was financed exclusively by its creators and an investor. Funding could not be called up because the makers were still students at the time the project started, which rules out film funding. The film was shot at different locations in Baden-Württemberg: Schlosshotel Waldlust and Haus Salem in Freudenstadt , Brandhofer Sägmühle in Gschwend and Snap Studios in Stuttgart.
In order to save money, the four filmmakers collected furniture and equipment free of charge for the production design a year before the shoot, from household resolutions, from bulky waste and through calls.
Bela Kiss: Prologue made the leap into the cinema through the film distribution company Drei-freunde, to whom Mirror Maze presented the film for the first time before it was shot. However, the decision to include it in the rental portfolio was not made until one year after the shooting began. The total production time was three years.

criticism
The film received mixed reviews. This is how the filmstarts.de critics judged:
“Lucien Förstner's debut film 'Bela Kiss: Prologue' has some strong moments - but in the end the disappointment prevails. Various sub-genres of horror film are processed too aimlessly, the popular role models and their superiority are too clear. "
The critic of moviemaze.de also criticized the fact that the film is based too much on its role models:
“And yet Bela Kiss: Prologue mostly looks like its American genre role models. It's actually a shame, as this largely obscures the fact that this directorial debut has quite a few good approaches to offer. "
The review of the film magazine Deadline was more positive :
"This successful 'prologue' is fun and makes you want more."
The film magazine Cinema also praised the film:
"A remarkable indie shocker with powerful images."
